Dear Hiring Manager,
I am excited to apply for the Lead UX Designer position at NEC Digital Studio. With over 10 years of experience designing complex digital products, including significant work in healthcare and clinical settings, I have developed a deep understanding of how to create intuitive, accessible, and impactful user experiences. My leadership experience includes building and governing design systems, mentoring cross-functional teams, and driving user-centered design strategies that improve patient outcomes.
I am particularly drawn to NEC's mission of making a difference in the world and your focus on value-based healthcare. My expertise in Figma, AI-driven design tools, and WCAG compliance aligns perfectly with your requirements. I welcome the opportunity to bring my strategic and hands-on approach to your team and contribute to the evolution of NEC Health's digital experience. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, [Your Name]
Sample interview questions
I have led UX for a suite of clinical applications where I prioritized consistency and safety. For example, I established a governance framework for the design system, ensuring all products adhered to accessibility standards and clinical workflows. I collaborated with clinicians and regulators to ensure compliance while maintaining usability. This strategic approach reduced onboarding time and improved user satisfaction significantly.
I would start by conducting a comprehensive audit of all products to identify common patterns and pain points. Then, I would engage stakeholders to define a shared design vision and create a phased roadmap for migrating to a unified design system. I would prioritize high-impact components and collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure buy-in and incremental adoption, minimizing disruption to users.
In one project, executive stakeholders wanted to prioritize feature speed over usability, while clinical staff demanded safer workflows. I organized a co-design workshop where I presented user research data, including usability test recordings showing critical errors. By demonstrating the business cost of those errors, I convinced the executives to invest in a design-led approach. The outcome improved both patient safety and efficiency, and the stakeholders became design advocates.
I actively follow design communities and experiment with new tools in side projects. In my last role, I used Figma's AI features to rapidly generate design variations and automate repetitive tasks like creating responsive layouts. This allowed me to explore more concepts in less time, and I also integrated AI-powered user testing tools to gather feedback earlier in the design process. I always ensure AI outputs are critically reviewed to maintain quality and accessibility.
In healthcare, users often have varied physical and cognitive abilities, so accessibility is critical. I design for keyboard navigation, sufficient color contrast, and clear error messaging. I use WCAG 2.2 guidelines as a baseline and conduct automated scans plus manual testing with assistive technologies. I also involve users with disabilities in testing sessions. For instance, I redesigned a patient portal to support screen readers and reduced input errors by 30%.
