Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my strong interest in the Lead Product Designer – Benefits Servicing role at Humana. With over 7 years of experience designing complex digital experiences—including significant work in healthcare and insurance—I am excited about the opportunity to shape the member benefits journey and drive measurable outcomes like increased satisfaction and retention. My background includes leading end-to-end design strategy, mentoring design teams, and partnering closely with product and engineering to bring human-centered solutions to life. I am particularly drawn to Humana's mission of helping people achieve lifelong well-being, and I am eager to apply my skills in simplifying complex information to empower members. Thank you for considering my application; I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to your team.
Sample interview questions
I start by deeply understanding the regulatory constraints and the user's mental model, then map out the full journey from awareness to post-service. I conduct user research to uncover pain points, collaborate with subject matter experts, and create low-fidelity prototypes to test assumptions early. Finally, I work closely with engineering to ensure feasibility and iterate based on usability testing and data.
I set a clear vision by defining design principles and success metrics, then I stay hands-on to ensure craft quality and to model best practices. I delegate parts of the execution to more junior designers while providing guidance and feedback, which helps me keep strategic perspective while ensuring deliverables are excellent.
In a previous project, research showed that users were abandoning a benefits enrollment flow because of overly complex medical terminology. Based on these insights, I simplified the language, broke the process into smaller steps, and added contextual tooltips. This reduced abandonment by 30% and significantly increased completion rates.
I start by integrating accessibility requirements from the beginning, including WCAG compliance, and ensure that all designs are tested with assistive technologies. I also promote inclusive design by involving users with disabilities in research sessions and educating the team about common barriers. This helps create products that are truly usable for everyone.
I define key performance indicators upfront, such as task success rate, time on task, and user satisfaction scores. After launch, I partner with analytics to track these metrics and correlate them with business outcomes like retention and operational cost reduction. I use this data to iterate and to communicate the value of design to stakeholders.
