Sample interview questions
I would start by asking the learner to describe the goal, expected output, and current blocker. I would inspect their approach against the project rubric, isolate the conceptual or implementation gap, and guide them through a small reproducible example rather than simply providing the solution.
I would use a practical workflow such as a document-question-answering assistant to explain embeddings, retrieval, prompting, and evaluation. The session would include a simple architecture diagram, trade-offs, common failure modes such as hallucinations or poor retrieval, and time for learners to apply the ideas to their own projects.
I evaluate models using task-appropriate quantitative measures, such as accuracy, F1, latency, and retrieval relevance, together with qualitative review of outputs. For GenAI systems, I would define representative test cases, compare prompt or model variants, document failure patterns, and address safety and bias considerations.
I would prepare a concise slide deck aligned to the rubric, explain each criterion with examples, and review a sample submission to demonstrate how quality is assessed. I would clearly distinguish required functionality from optional improvements and leave time for questions about common implementation mistakes.
I set clear availability expectations, use organized notes and follow-up actions, and tailor explanations to the learner's level of familiarity. In group settings, I encourage questions, acknowledge uncertainty when needed, and provide reliable resources or next steps after the session.

Mandatory Technical Skills – School of AI
- Proficiency in Python and API integration
- Strong understanding of core AI/ML concepts

- Working knowledge of ML libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow)

Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities as a technical mentor will be divided into three major tasks.
- 1:1 video calls
- Virtual Technical Deep-Dive Sessions
- Group Q&A sessions
Personal 1:1 Session:
- Provide personalized support by addressing learner questions related to course content and projects.
- Prior to the call mentors are expected to review the students’ previous project submission(s) – provided by the Mentor Success Team when available – and/or any specific areas of the Nanodegree content or project that the student has expressed confusion or difficulty with.
Technical Deep-Dive Session:
- For concept deep-dives, mentors will come prepared with a slide presentation that reviews a Nanodegree concept in more detail, share different use-cases for the concept to broaden student perspectives and understanding, and hold a Q&A session with the learners.
- For project walkthroughs, a mentor will come prepared with a slide presentation that outlines each element of the rubric to help learners understand expectations and typical problem areas they may encounter. This can include a mentor “grading” a sample submission to demonstrate what mentors are looking for when reviewing projects.
Group Q&A Session:
- Host regular sessions (via Slack or video) to address learner queries related to projects and coursework. No prior preparation required.
