Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Intermediate Developer, Rust role on 1Password’s Everyday Experience team. My experience building reliable software, improving developer workflows, and delivering maintainable features aligns well with your focus on secure, trusted customer experiences.

I would bring a pragmatic engineering approach to Rust development, testing, production support, and cross-functional collaboration with Product, Design, Security, and Infrastructure partners. I am also comfortable using AI-assisted development tools responsibly while applying strong technical review and security judgment.

I would welcome the opportunity to help 1Password deliver dependable, intuitive experiences for its customers.

Sample interview questions
How would you take ownership of a complex Rust feature from design through production support?

I would start by clarifying the customer problem, success criteria, security constraints, and operational requirements. I would review existing patterns and dependencies, write or contribute to an RFC when appropriate, implement the change incrementally with tests and observability, and coordinate a monitored release with a rollback plan.

How do you use Rust to improve reliability and maintainability in production systems?

I use Rust’s ownership model, type system, error handling, and concurrency primitives to make invalid states harder to represent and failures easier to diagnose. I would complement implementation safeguards with focused unit tests, integration tests, code review, logging, metrics, and documentation for operational behavior.

How would you investigate a customer-facing reliability issue that is increasing support volume?

I would first reproduce and scope the issue using support context, telemetry, logs, and recent changes. After identifying the cause, I would prioritize customer impact, communicate status clearly, ship a safe mitigation or fix, and complete a retrospective with preventive tests or monitoring.

How do you responsibly use AI-assisted tools in a security-sensitive engineering environment?

I would use AI tools for bounded tasks such as code exploration, test ideas, documentation drafts, and debugging hypotheses, while treating outputs as untrusted suggestions. I would validate results through source review, compilation, testing, security assessment, and normal peer-review processes before production use.

How do you make pragmatic technical tradeoffs when Product, Security, and Infrastructure priorities differ?

I would communicate tradeoffs in terms of customer impact, security risk, reliability, delivery time, and long-term maintenance cost. When partners disagree, I would propose options, document assumptions, seek the smallest safe experiment where possible, and align on a decision owner and measurable outcome.

Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

We are seeking an Intermediate Developer on our Everyday Experience team. Everyday Experience owns the surfaces and workflows that shape how customers use 1Password day to day, with a focus on reliability, usability, and trust across core product experiences.

The team’s work often sits at the intersection of product quality, cross-platform foundations, and customer-facing execution, which makes it a critical partner for company-priority initiatives.

How we’re using AI today

Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experienced developer with strong Rust knowledge.

  • Able to own complex systems work end-to-end, from design through delivery and production support.

  • Comfortable working across product surfaces, backend services, CI/CD, reliability, and operational workflows.

  • Strong technical judgment and ability to make pragmatic tradeoffs across quality, speed, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Able to ramp into complex codebases and ambiguous problem spaces quickly.

  • Collaborative across teams, including Product, Design, Security, Browser, Backend, and Infrastructure.

  • Effective at using AI tooling to accelerate development, testing, debugging, documentation, and code exploration.

  • Brings the expertise needed to validate, review, and safely apply AI-assisted work in production systems.

Bonus points for:

  • Strong experience building backend services in Go

  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure(AWS)

What you can expect:

  • Acquire and maintain a solid understanding of your development toolchain and use it to contribute new features, improvements, and bug fixes across the team’s codebases.

  • Participate in the complete lifecycle of a feature: contribute to planning, do the development, and help oversee its release and customer support.

  • Ensure code is high quality and maintainable by developing new testing strategies in addition to existing ones, writing unit and integration tests for new and existing code, documenting your work thoroughly, and reporting issues effectively.

  • Plan your solutions ahead of writing code, recognize and reuse existing patterns and best practices (development, security, quality), and submit well-documented merge requests.

  • Participate in and review documented proposals (RFCs/RFDs), promote best practices in code reviews, and provide thoughtful peer feedback.

  • Empower our customer support team to better support our products, address tough issues driving support inflows, and help determine high-priority customer feedback.

  • Be an active participant in team organization: refinement, prioritization, and group estimation.

  • Be curious and on the lookout for improvement opportunities you can suggest or tackle yourself, whether in repo cleanup, community engagement tooling, or IDE integration ergonomics.
