About this role.
Pleo is hiring a Staff Frontend Engineer to lead technical direction and hands-on delivery for Telescope, its design system spanning web and mobile. The role focuses on component architecture, design tokens, versioning, testing, accessibility, documentation, release practices, and developer tooling. This engineer will shape contribution and intake processes while partnering closely with design and product engineering teams across the company. Success requires strong TypeScript and modern frontend expertise, platform-minded systems design, stakeholder alignment, and mentorship of other engineers.

Sample interview questions
I would start by understanding current adoption, pain points, contribution patterns, and product-team needs. I would define clear principles for APIs, accessibility, versioning, and quality, then publish a pragmatic roadmap with measurable outcomes such as adoption, upgrade completion, and defect reduction. Direction should be reinforced through reference implementations, documentation, automated checks, and regular cross-functional feedback rather than through standards alone.
I would first assess the impact through usage data and repository searches, then determine whether a backward-compatible path is possible. If a breaking change is necessary, I would provide a migration guide, codemods where feasible, deprecation warnings, a communicated timeline, and support for high-impact teams. I would track migration progress and remove the old API only after teams have had a realistic and well-supported transition period.
I would combine unit tests for component logic, integration tests for behavior and accessibility, visual regression testing for UI changes, and targeted end-to-end coverage for critical workflows. Automated accessibility checks should run in CI, but they should complement manual review for keyboard behavior, screen-reader semantics, and interaction design. The strategy should prioritize confidence and fast feedback while keeping maintenance costs proportionate to component risk.
I would make the contribution path explicit, lightweight, and predictable through documented standards, templates, ownership expectations, and clear triage. Contributors need early design and engineering feedback, reliable local tooling, and transparent decisions about prioritization and maintenance. I would also recognize successful contributions and use recurring feedback to remove friction from the process.
I focus my coding time on high-leverage work such as foundational architecture, difficult components, automation, and exemplar implementations. I create leverage by setting clear technical context, mentoring engineers, reviewing important designs, and unblocking decisions across teams. Regularly revisiting priorities ensures that my direct implementation work supports the broader strategy rather than becoming a bottleneck.
About Pleo
Messy spend management is tricky business. And tedious processes are a lose-lose situation for all involved, not just finance. At Pleo, we’re changing that. We build spend solutions that make managing money seamless, empowering, and surprisingly effective for finance teams and employees alike – with a vision to help all businesses ‘go beyond’.
The word ‘Pleo’ actually means ‘more than you’d expect’, and living by that mantra has been the secret to our success over the last 10 years.

We need people who take pride in uncovering customer needs, who turn complex problems into simple solutions, challenge the way things are done (respectfully), and always aim high. With great ambitions driving us forward, we can’t say we’ve got this whole thing figured out. And frankly, that’s half the fun! What we can say is that we’re a driven, progressive, and, importantly, a kind bunch of 850+ people from over 100 nationalities, all committed to delivering the future of business spending, together.
We at Pleo are on a mission to make spend management surprisingly effective and empowering. We build a product used by thousands of companies across Europe, and our design system is a core part of delivering a consistent, accessible, high-quality experience.

Designing maintainable systems with clear boundaries, versioning, and backwards compatibility.
Testing practices and tooling (unit, integration, end-to-end) and a strong quality mindset.
Accessibility and performance best practices for UI systems.
Collaboration with designers and product engineers, and navigating tradeoffs across stakeholders.
Your colleagues would say you
Lead by example and raise the bar with pragmatism and care.
