Sample interview questions
I establish clear ownership, delivery goals, and growth plans for each engineer, then reserve focused time for architecture reviews, complex technical risks, and high-leverage coding or troubleshooting. I avoid becoming a bottleneck by delegating decisions appropriately, coaching technical leads, and using regular one-on-ones and planning rituals to maintain alignment.
I would begin by defining the customer problem, measurable outcomes, data sources, model-quality expectations, and operational constraints with product and domain stakeholders. I would then split the work into product, data pipeline, model, platform, and observability components; ship incrementally behind clear evaluation criteria; and monitor quality, latency, reliability, cost, and user feedback after launch.
I would assess the current architecture, test coverage, deployment process, service health metrics, and recurring incidents to identify the highest-risk areas. From there, I would prioritize pragmatic improvements such as API contracts, automated tests, code review standards, CI/CD quality gates, structured logging, monitoring, and incremental refactoring tied to business value.
I make priorities visible through a shared roadmap that connects work to customer impact, risk, and strategic objectives. I use regular cross-functional planning, define trade-offs explicitly, protect capacity for operational work, and communicate early when scope, sequencing, or staffing must change.
I would start with practical use cases such as code assistance, test generation, documentation, incident analysis, and product experimentation, while setting clear security, privacy, and review expectations. I would measure outcomes such as cycle time, defect rates, and developer experience, share effective practices, and ensure that engineers retain accountability for technical and customer-impacting decisions.
