About this role.

AI Summary

AssetWatch is hiring a mid-level Quality Assurance Engineer to validate web and mobile applications supporting predictive maintenance for manufacturers. The role combines hands-on manual, exploratory, regression, API, database, and end-to-end automated testing. The engineer will build and maintain TypeScript and Playwright test suites, connect them to CI/CD pipelines, and use AI-assisted coding tools to improve test development and failure triage. Success requires close collaboration with development teams, disciplined defect management in Jira and Zephyr, and strong judgment when reviewing AI-generated test code. This is a remote-first role for candidates across the United States and Ontario, Canada, with required core-hour collaboration.

Core skills

Skills and capabilities most closely associated with this opportunity.

Sample interview questions
How have you translated manual test cases into maintainable Playwright automation?

I first prioritize stable, repeatable, high-value regression scenarios and confirm that acceptance criteria are testable. I structure Playwright tests with reusable page or component abstractions, resilient locators, clear assertions, and test data controls. I then run the suite in CI and monitor failures to improve reliability rather than simply adding more tests.

How would you investigate a flaky end-to-end test in a CI pipeline?

I would reproduce the failure locally and in CI where possible, review traces, screenshots, videos, logs, and timing behavior, and determine whether the root cause is the application, environment, data, or test implementation. I would replace brittle waits and selectors with condition-based synchronization and stable locators, then validate the fix through repeated runs. If the issue reflects a product defect, I would document it clearly and work with engineering on remediation.

What is your approach to API and database testing alongside UI automation?

I test APIs directly to validate status codes, schemas, authorization, error handling, and important business rules before relying on UI coverage. For database validation, I use SQL to verify that application actions produce correct persisted data while respecting data-access and privacy practices. This layered approach provides faster feedback and reduces dependence on slow end-to-end tests.

How would you use AI coding tools in QA automation while preserving quality?

I would use AI tools to accelerate scaffolding, generate candidate test cases, summarize failures, and suggest refactors, but I would treat all output as untrusted draft code. I would verify selectors, assertions, test intent, security implications, and compatibility with project conventions before committing anything. The goal is faster delivery with engineering judgment, not automated acceptance of generated tests.

How do you communicate quality risk when a release deadline is approaching?

I communicate the risk early using clear evidence: affected functionality, severity, reproducibility, test coverage, user impact, and recommended options. I distinguish release-blocking defects from known acceptable risks and propose mitigation such as a feature flag, targeted regression coverage, or a limited rollout. This allows product and engineering stakeholders to make an informed release decision.
