Sample interview questions
How do you ensure that a month-end account reconciliation is complete and accurate?

I begin by confirming the account balance agrees to the general ledger, then reconcile it to supporting schedules or source-system reports. I investigate reconciling items promptly, document the nature and resolution of each item, and ensure all required journal entries have appropriate support and review evidence.

Describe your experience preparing journal entries for the close process.

I prepare entries by validating the business purpose, source data, account coding, period, and supporting calculations. Before posting, I check that the entry follows company policy and accounting guidance, and after posting I verify the entry affected the intended accounts and reconciliation schedules.

How would you handle a discrepancy between an operational report and the general ledger?

I would first isolate the variance by period, entity, transaction type, and source system. I would then review timing differences, interface failures, duplicate or missing transactions, and incorrect account mapping, partnering with the responsible operational team to resolve the root cause and document any correcting entry.

Give an example of a process improvement you could make in a recurring close activity.

For a manual reconciliation, I would map the current workflow and identify repeatable data gathering or calculation steps. I could create a standardized template with controlled formulas, clear variance thresholds, and an aging tracker for open items, reducing preparation time while improving consistency and reviewability.

How do you prioritize when several close deliverables have the same deadline?

I prioritize based on financial statement impact, dependency on other teams, risk, and the time required to resolve exceptions. I communicate early about blockers, complete high-risk and dependent tasks first, and maintain a close checklist so stakeholders have clear visibility into progress and remaining items.
