Sample interview questions
Describe a forecasting model you built or significantly improved. What was its business impact?

I would explain the model's drivers, data sources, assumptions, and scenario logic, then quantify how it improved forecast accuracy, decision speed, or stakeholder visibility. I would also describe how I documented the model and established a recurring process to keep it reliable.

How do you investigate a material variance between actual results and forecast?

I begin by validating the underlying data and reconciling actuals with Accounting. I then decompose the variance into volume, price, mix, timing, headcount, and one-time drivers, discuss findings with accountable business partners, and communicate the implication for the updated forecast and decisions.

How would you automate a manual monthly reporting process?

I would first map the current workflow, identify repeated data preparation and reconciliation steps, and define the decision-useful outputs. Then I would standardize source data, automate transformations through appropriate finance and BI tooling, build controlled dashboards, and retain review checks to ensure accuracy.

How do you make a complex financial analysis useful for an executive audience?

I lead with the decision, key insight, and recommended action rather than the full analytical process. I use a concise narrative supported by a few relevant metrics, clearly state assumptions and risks, and keep detailed schedules available for follow-up questions.

Tell me about a time you partnered with a non-finance leader to influence a business decision.

I would describe how I learned the team's operating context, translated its choices into measurable financial drivers, and presented practical trade-offs rather than simply reporting results. The strongest example would show that the partner adopted the recommendation and that the resulting impact was tracked over time.
