LivePerson is seeking a Principal Engineer and AI Architect to define and deliver next-generation enterprise conversational AI products using generative AI. The role owns cloud-native architecture, technical direction, scalable implementation, and adoption of modern AI tools and services. It requires deep full-stack engineering experience, enterprise SaaS architecture expertise, and a proven record of shipping AI products to production. This senior technical leader will mentor engineering teams and partner closely with product leadership and other principal engineers. The position is fully remote for candidates in the United States.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with the customer use case, risk profile, latency targets, and measurable quality criteria. The architecture would separate orchestration, model access, retrieval and knowledge services, guardrails, observability, and evaluation pipelines, with strong tenant isolation and data-governance controls. I would deploy incrementally behind feature flags, monitor quality and cost, and use offline and online evaluations to continuously improve outcomes.
I design around clear service boundaries, horizontal scaling, asynchronous processing where appropriate, idempotent operations, and well-defined failure handling. I also establish service-level objectives, capacity plans, distributed tracing, alerting, and disaster-recovery procedures. Resilience is validated through automated testing, load testing, and controlled failure exercises rather than assumed from the design.
I set a concise architecture vision, decision principles, and reusable platform standards while empowering teams to own implementation details. I use lightweight architecture reviews, written decision records, and regular technical forums to align teams early. Mentorship and clear interfaces help teams move independently while preserving consistency in security, reliability, and product quality.
I assess the tool against a representative evaluation suite covering task quality, safety, latency, cost, reliability, data handling, and operational fit. I validate claims with a controlled proof of concept and define fallback behavior before production adoption. A rollout should include monitoring, cost controls, security review, and an exit strategy to avoid unnecessary vendor lock-in.
I would work with Product to define the target user workflows, expected business impact, success metrics, and constraints such as privacy and time to market. I would then break the vision into incremental releases that validate the highest-risk assumptions first. Throughout delivery, I would make technical tradeoffs explicit so product decisions balance capability, reliability, cost, and long-term maintainability.

Position Overview
Our goal is to deliver the next-generation of Conversational AI (CAI) by leveraging and creating the latest in Generative AI technology. We are looking for a Principal Engineer, AI Architect to design and implement the latest Generative AI based solution, reporting directly to the Head of Architecture. This role includes working with the innovation team and other Principal engineers. As an architect, the engineer will be instrumental in shaping the AI vision of LivePerson.

You Have: Required Skills & Qualifications
- 13+ years building full-stack applications with Java and Node.js (Python and Vue.js are a plus)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Communications, or related field
- 7+ years designing and architecting enterprise-grade SaaS Products
- 5+ years shipping AI products to production
- Deep experience with cloud platforms (GCP experience is a plus)
- Background in data analytics and reporting tools, especially for contact centers and conversational analytics (nice to have)
- Proven track record leading engineering team as technical expert
The salary range for this role will be between $190,000 – $210,000 USD. Final compensation will be determined by a variety of factors, including, but not limited to your location, skills, experience, education, and/or professional certifications.
