Sample interview questions
I begin by mapping decision-makers, commercial terms, adoption health, business outcomes, and renewal risks well ahead of the renewal date. I then create a mutual action plan with clear milestones, executive engagement points, and a value narrative tied to the customer’s priorities. I maintain contingency plans for procurement, budget, and competitive risks.
I would first understand the underlying business issue rather than responding immediately with price. I would quantify the account’s value, identify acceptable trade-offs such as term length, payment structure, scope, or reference participation, and align internally on approval boundaries. My goal is to protect long-term value while offering a solution that addresses the customer’s legitimate concerns.
I monitor gross retention, net retention, renewal rate, forecast accuracy, renewal coverage, at-risk ARR, time-to-renewal, and stage aging. I segment accounts by value, risk, and likelihood to renew so executive attention is focused on the most material opportunities. I also track expansion opportunities separately to ensure they are transitioned effectively to the appropriate commercial owner.
I provide a concise, evidence-based summary of the account value, renewal date, risk level, root causes, stakeholder position, and recommended actions. I clearly state what decisions or executive support are needed and by when. This approach makes the escalation actionable rather than simply reporting a problem.
I establish shared account plans early, with clear ownership for adoption, value realization, commercial negotiation, and expansion discovery. Customer Success helps validate outcomes and resolve adoption risks, while Account Management leads qualified growth motions. Regular account reviews keep the customer experience coordinated and prevent commercial opportunities or renewal risks from being missed.
