Sample interview questions
I would explain the source and destination systems, the HL7 message types involved, mapping and transformation decisions, exception handling, and the test plan. I would include how I validated message completeness, patient and encounter matching, acknowledgements, and production monitoring before and after go-live.
I begin by assessing patient-care impact and reviewing interface-engine queues, logs, acknowledgements, connectivity, and recent configuration or release changes. I isolate whether the issue is source generation, transport, transformation, destination processing, or credentials, communicate status to stakeholders, restore service safely, and document root cause and preventive actions.
I would translate technical constraints into workflow and patient-safety impacts, clarify the underlying objective with each group, and document feasible options with tradeoffs. I would facilitate agreement on a solution that protects data integrity and clinical usability while meeting platform and implementation constraints.
I maintain a documented inventory of interfaces, critical data elements, expected workflows, and test cases. For each release, I execute prioritized end-to-end validation using representative messages and data, compare results with expected mappings, verify error handling and downstream delivery, and obtain stakeholder confirmation for high-impact workflows.
I would describe using API documentation and tools such as Swagger or Postman to authenticate, construct requests, inspect JSON payloads, handle status codes, and test error scenarios. Unlike event-oriented HL7 v2 feeds, FHIR APIs use standardized resources and web protocols, so I focus on resource modeling, query behavior, security, rate limits, and reliable retry or reconciliation processes.
