Sample interview questions
How would you assess a new student's readiness for AMC 8 or AMC 10 preparation?

I would begin with a short diagnostic covering core content areas and several non-routine problems, then discuss the student’s prior contest experience and goals. I would use the results to identify conceptual gaps, problem-solving habits, pacing needs, and an appropriate learning plan.

How do you explain a difficult competition problem when a student is stuck?

I first ask the student to articulate what they know and try a smaller or related case. I then provide progressively targeted hints rather than immediately giving the solution, and afterward review the underlying strategy so the student can recognize similar patterns independently.

What methods would you use to keep online one-on-one math lessons engaging?

I would use an interactive digital whiteboard, frequent check-in questions, timed mini-challenges, and student-led solution explanations. Alternating guided examples with independent attempts helps maintain attention while showing me where the student needs support.

How would you help a student improve after repeatedly missing counting or probability questions?

I would determine whether the issue is foundational knowledge, organization, or interpretation of the question. Then I would teach structured methods such as casework, complementary counting, and organized tables, followed by targeted practice and reflection on common mistakes.

How do you provide feedback that improves both performance and confidence?

I give specific feedback on the student’s reasoning, not just whether an answer is correct. I highlight effective choices, identify one or two actionable improvements, and set attainable next steps so the student sees measurable progress over time.
