Sample interview questions
How would you explain a challenging math concept to a Grade 2 student who is becoming frustrated?

I would first identify the exact point of confusion through a few simple questions. Then I would use concrete visual examples, such as counters, drawings, or a relatable story, and break the concept into smaller steps. I would celebrate effort and progress while checking understanding before moving on.

How do you tailor a one-on-one online math lesson to an individual student?

I begin by reviewing the student’s current skill level, learning goals, and prior misconceptions. During the lesson, I adjust pacing, examples, and practice problems based on the student’s responses. I close with a quick check for understanding and provide targeted next steps for practice.

What strategies would you use to keep lower-elementary students engaged in a virtual lesson?

I would use short activity changes, interactive whiteboard work, visual models, age-appropriate games, and frequent opportunities for the student to respond. I would also set clear expectations, use encouraging language, and connect problems to the student’s interests whenever possible.

How would you provide feedback to a student and their family after a tutoring session?

I would give specific, constructive feedback that highlights what the student did well, the concept they are still developing, and one or two practical next steps. I would keep the language positive and easy to understand, using examples from the lesson to make progress clear.

How do you ensure your math instruction aligns with Common Core State Standards?

I would identify the relevant grade-level standard before planning the lesson and select objectives, examples, and practice tasks that directly support it. I would assess the student’s understanding against that objective and document any prerequisite skills that need reinforcement.
