Sample interview questions
How have you led an annual planning and long-range planning process across multiple business lines?

I begin by aligning leaders on strategic assumptions, growth drivers, timelines, and decision rights. I build an integrated model that connects operating metrics, revenue, headcount, and expenses, then run structured review cycles to challenge assumptions and reconcile trade-offs. After approval, I translate the plan into clear owner-level targets and a recurring reporting cadence.

Describe a time when your forecast identified a material risk or opportunity early.

In a prior planning cycle, I identified a variance between leading demand indicators and the revenue forecast. I quantified scenarios, validated the drivers with operating leaders, and presented the impact along with mitigation options. This enabled leadership to adjust spending and targets before the risk affected the full-quarter result.

How would you evaluate the economics of a subscription and advertising business?

I would connect customer acquisition, conversion, retention, pricing, engagement, and monetization metrics to revenue and contribution margin. For subscriptions, I would examine cohorts, churn, renewal behavior, and lifetime value; for advertising, I would assess inventory, fill rate, pricing, and demand trends. I would use these drivers to create scenario-based forecasts and identify the highest-value operating levers.

What makes financial reporting useful to executive leadership and the Board?

Effective reporting is concise, decision-oriented, and tied to the company’s strategic objectives. I focus on the most consequential performance drivers, explain material variances, surface risks and opportunities, and make the requested decisions explicit. Detailed support should be available, but the core narrative must be clear and forward-looking.

How do you improve a forecasting process without sacrificing accuracy or stakeholder adoption?

I first map the existing process to identify manual work, inconsistent definitions, and sources of forecast error. I then standardize inputs, automate repeatable reporting, establish clear driver ownership, and test changes through parallel forecasting cycles. Adoption improves when stakeholders see that the process is simpler, more transparent, and produces insights they can use.
