The role, at a glance.
Thumbtack is seeking a Full-Stack Engineer to build internal product surfaces and services for an AI-enabled business platform. The role focuses on interfaces for configuring agents, reviewing and correcting agent actions, and making automated behavior observable and auditable. The engineer will own end-to-end delivery across React, TypeScript, backend services, and data models while partnering directly with business stakeholders. Success requires strong product judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and an ability to design reliable workflows around non-deterministic AI systems.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by identifying actions, permissions, risk levels, and approval requirements with users. I would provide clear policy controls, safe defaults, previews of intended actions, and an audit trail so users can understand and revise agent behavior without needing to edit code.
I would capture inputs, model and prompt versions, tool calls, outputs, approval decisions, failures, latency, and user corrections. I would pair structured logs and trace IDs with evaluation datasets and dashboards that make regressions and behavior changes measurable.
I would clarify the user outcome, map the current workflow, identify failure points, and define the smallest useful version of the solution. I would validate assumptions with stakeholders, document trade-offs, and use feedback from an early release to guide subsequent iterations.
I place interaction state and presentation concerns in the frontend, while keeping authorization, business rules, durable workflow state, and sensitive operations on the backend. I use explicit API contracts so the interface remains responsive without compromising consistency or security.
I would model each action as an observable step with idempotency protections, clear status reporting, and retry rules. For irreversible or high-risk actions, I would require approval or provide compensation paths, allowing users to correct a failed sequence safely.

About the Business Applications Team
The Business Applications org builds and operates the internal systems that keep Thumbtack running at scale: Salesforce-centered workflows, admin tooling, and the integrations that connect teams across the company. We’re now expanding that foundation into a broader internal platform for AI-enabled work — shared APIs, reusable integration patterns, and safe, auditable capabilities for business-critical actions. We work directly with the business teams who depend on these systems, turning complex operational needs into software that’s easier to run, extend, and automate responsibly.
The challenge
Agents can already take action inside Thumbtack’s internal systems. The harder problem is making that trustworthy: giving business teams a way to configure what agents are allowed to do, review and correct their work, and see clearly what happened and why. Without that, automation stays stuck in pilots. This engineer owns the product surface that turns agent capability into something teams will actually rely on for business-critical work — and the services behind it.
What you’ll do
Design and build the interfaces business teams use to configure agents, review their work, approve or correct actions, and understand what happened and why.
Build observability and evaluation tooling that makes agent behavior legible — where it succeeded, where it failed, and whether a change made things better.
Work across the stack, from React and TypeScript through service code and data models, owning features end to end through build, test, launch, and iteration.
Partner directly with the business teams who use what you build; translate ambiguous operational problems into working software.
Own the full lifecycle of your work, including monitoring and post-launch improvement.
In order to be successful, you must bring
3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong frontend skills with React and TypeScript, including complex application state and data-dense interfaces.
Solid backend engineering ability. We use Go, PHP, and Python, and we expect strong engineers to pick up a new language.
Working knowledge of relational and non-relational data stores (Postgres, DynamoDB, or similar).
Real product judgment: you can look at a workflow, decide what to build, and say what to cut.
Interest in the problems that come with non-deterministic systems — uncertainty, partial failure, and designing for human correction rather than assuming a correct answer every time.
Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, close your own knowledge gaps, and deliver in an evolving environment.
