Inventory Cost Accounting Manager
Location: Remote (US)

ABOUT BARK
Think Disney for dogs. We aren’t just selling toys; we’re creating the joy, connection, and delightful chaos that defines the bond between dogs and their people. At our core, we believe dogs make life better, and we’re on a mission to return the favor by building THE Dog Company.

We operate at the intersection of data, technology, and pure creativity. We move fast, test relentlessly, and use real feedback from millions of pups to build smarter systems, better products, and more meaningful experiences. We’re looking for people who want to challenge the status quo and help us invent what’s next for dogs and their humans.

THE TEAM
The Accounting team keeps BARK’s financial reporting accurate, reliable, and ready for the decisions that move our business forward. We own the monthly close, financial controls, and GAAP reporting that our internal teams and investors rely on.

As Inventory Cost Accounting Manager, you’ll report to the Controller and own the accounting for two of our biggest financial drivers: inventory and cost of goods sold (COGS). Our inventory moves across subscription boxes, retail partners, and direct-to-consumer orders, with new themed products every month, so the accounting is anything but static. You’ll lead a team of accountants and work closely with Purchasing, Fulfillment, Logistics, FP&A, and our systems teams to make sure the numbers reflect what’s actually happening across our business.

WHO WE’RE SNIFFING FOR
We’re looking for someone who knows inventory accounting inside and out, can lead a team through a clean, accurate close, and isn’t afraid to dig into the details when something doesn’t add up.

You bring strong accounting judgment, know how to turn complex inventory data into clear answers, and look for ways to make processes simpler and more reliable. You’re comfortable rolling up your sleeves, developing your team, and using technology and automation to make the work better. And, of course, you love dogs.

KEY DUTIES

  • Own inventory and COGS accounting across our 3PL warehouses and manufacturing partners, ensuring accurate inventory valuation and financial reporting.
  • Deliver a clean, on-time monthly inventory close and give Finance leadership a clear read on what’s driving COGS and gross margin, including reserves, landed and average costs, and purchase price variances.
  • Keep inventory audit-ready and controls tight. Review journal entries and reconciliations, oversee physical counts, support quarterly reviews and the annual audit, and document conclusions on complex transactions.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of accountants, setting clear priorities, reviewing work, and helping the team deliver accurate results on time.
  • Improve how inventory accounting gets done. Partner with Operations, Finance, and systems teams to strengthen data accuracy, reduce manual work, and use automation and AI-enabled tools where appropriate to make reconciliations, reporting, and controls more efficient.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Strong experience in inventory and cost accounting, ideally within a consumer products, retail, manufacturing, or direct-to-consumer business.
  • Hands-on knowledge of inventory valuation, COGS, landed costs, reserves, and inventory reconciliations.
  • Solid understanding of US GAAP and SOX controls in a public company environment.
  • Experience leading and developing accountants, with the ability to balance hands-on work and team management.
  • Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems and inventory management applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to investigate discrepancies, understand root causes, and explain what’s moving the numbers to the Controller, FP&A, and Operations partners.
  • A track record of improving accounting processes through better systems, automation, and data-driven workflows.
  • Comfort making judgment calls on gray-area inventory issues and keeping the close on track when priorities shift.

This is a full-time, remote position open to candidates based in the United States, with potential quarterly travel to New York City and our 3PL warehouses. We offer competitive compensation, equity, and benefits designed to support both you and your pack, including comprehensive healthcare and pet wellness coverage.

Sample interview questions
How do you ensure inventory valuation and COGS are accurate across multiple warehouses and sales channels?

I establish a disciplined close process that reconciles ERP inventory subledgers to the general ledger, validates warehouse and 3PL data, investigates key variances, and reviews landed cost, reserves, and purchase-price variance calculations. I use documented controls and exception reporting to ensure issues are resolved before results are finalized.

Describe how you would investigate an unexpected gross-margin decline.

I would first quantify the change by product, channel, warehouse, and period, then separate volume and price effects from cost drivers. I would test changes in purchase prices, freight and landed costs, inventory reserves, write-offs, returns, standard or average costs, and data-interface accuracy, then communicate the root cause and recommended actions to Finance and Operations.

What is your approach to managing the monthly inventory close?

I start with a clear close calendar, ownership assignments, and pre-close validation of critical data feeds. During close, I prioritize reconciliations, journal-entry review, reserve analysis, and variance explanations; I also maintain an issue log and escalate risks early so the team can meet deadlines without compromising accuracy.

How have you improved an accounting process through automation?

I identify repetitive, high-volume reconciliations or manual data transformations and map the control requirements before redesigning the workflow. For example, I would automate ERP-to-3PL data comparisons with defined matching rules, exception queues, approval evidence, and dashboards, reducing manual effort while improving traceability and control quality.

How do you develop accountants while maintaining high standards during a demanding close?

I set clear expectations for deliverables, review standards, and deadlines, then provide regular coaching based on specific work outputs. I use documented procedures, cross-training, and progressive ownership of more complex accounts so team members build judgment while I retain appropriate review and escalation controls.
