Sample interview questions
How would you balance liquidity, safety, and yield when investing fiat treasury balances?

I would begin with a liquidity forecast and segment balances by operational, contingency, and strategic horizons. I would prioritize capital preservation and immediate access for near-term needs, then diversify eligible surplus funds across approved counterparties and duration buckets to improve risk-adjusted yield within policy limits.

What factors do you assess before placing funds with a bank or investment counterparty?

I assess credit quality, financial strength, regulatory standing, deposit protection where applicable, exposure limits, legal documentation, settlement capabilities, concentration risk, and country risk. I also monitor ongoing changes in ratings, market signals, and the counterparty's operational performance.

How would you respond to a rapid interest-rate change that affects the treasury portfolio?

I would quantify the duration and mark-to-market impact, reassess liquidity needs, and compare the portfolio against approved risk limits. Based on the findings, I would recommend measured rebalancing toward suitable maturities or instruments while avoiding unnecessary realized losses and documenting the decision rationale.

Describe how you would build a regular treasury investment performance report for management.

I would report balances by asset class, currency, duration, liquidity tier, and counterparty; show realized and unrealized performance against relevant benchmarks; and highlight yield, duration, concentration, limit utilization, and key risks. The report would include concise recommendations and clearly identify required decisions or policy exceptions.

How do you ensure treasury investment activities comply with internal controls and regulations?

I would work from documented investment mandates, approved instrument lists, delegated authorities, and counterparty limits. I would maintain complete trade documentation, perform reconciliations and control checks, escalate exceptions promptly, and partner with legal, compliance, tax, and accounting teams before implementing new products or structures.
