Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Business Engineer - Ads position at Reddit. With over 5 years of experience in software development and a passion for AdTech, I have a strong track record of leading technical integrations and building scalable solutions. My expertise in Python and REST APIs, combined with my ability to collaborate across engineering and business teams, aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role.

In my previous role, I successfully led the integration of a major advertising platform, resulting in a 30% increase in ad revenue for our partners. I thrive in fast-paced environments where I can take ownership of end-to-end projects and drive innovation. I am particularly drawn to Reddit's mission of fostering authentic communities and would be honored to contribute to its advertising ecosystem.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can add value to your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe a time you led a complex technical integration with an external partner. What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
In my previous role, I led the integration of our advertising API with a major social media platform. The main challenge was aligning our API design with their data model, which required extensive coordination with both teams. I created a detailed integration plan, held regular syncs, and developed a proof-of-concept that demonstrated the value. We resolved differences by compromising on data formats and using a middleware layer.
How would you design a scalable system for onboarding multiple advertising partners with different API requirements?
I would create a modular onboarding framework with configurable integration templates. Each template would handle common authentication (OAuth2), data mapping, and error handling. Partners would provide their API specs, and we'd use a plugin architecture to customize. I'd also implement monitoring and logging to track integration health and provide self-service documentation.
Explain the role of OAuth2 in advertising API integrations and how you would implement it.
OAuth2 is critical for secure delegated access. For advertising APIs, I would use the authorization code flow with PKCE to obtain tokens. The process involves registering the client, redirecting users to Reddit's authorization endpoint, exchanging the code for an access token and refresh token, and using the token to make API calls. I'd implement token storage with encryption and automatic refresh.
How do you prioritize features or integrations when working with multiple partners and internal teams?
I use a framework based on impact, effort, and strategic alignment. I discuss with partners to understand their needs and timeline, then align with product and engineering to assess technical complexity. I create a roadmap with clear milestones and communicate trade-offs. For example, a high-impact integration with a major partner would take precedence over smaller ones.
Describe a situation where you had to influence a product roadmap based on partner feedback.
While working with a large advertiser, they needed a real-time bidding feature that our platform lacked. I gathered data on the revenue potential and presented a business case to the product team, including a prototype. After several discussions, the feature was prioritized for the next quarter, leading to a 20% increase in ad spend from that partner.

  • Lead onboarding, testing, and pre-launch support to ensure a smooth and successful implementation experience.
  • Represent the technical voice of the partner (or direct advertiser) internally, surfacing feedback and influencing product and platform priorities to improve outcomes for both sides.
  • Support escalations for complex or high-impact integrations and provide clear, actionable direction to resolve blockers quickly and sustainably.

  • 5+ years of software development experience, with a strong track record of owning end-to-end technical projects, including cross-org coordination.
