Payroll Management Workday Payroll US Payroll Compliance Vendor Management SOX Compliance M&A Integration HR Operations Strategic Leadership Process Improvement Team Leadership

I am excited to apply for the Senior Payroll Manager position at The Cigna Group. With over 10 years of progressive payroll operations experience in large, complex organizations, I have a proven track record of leading outsourced payroll services and ensuring compliance across multiple entities.

My hands-on expertise with Workday Payroll, Time, and Absence modules has enabled me to drive process improvements and system implementations that scale with business growth. I have successfully managed payroll during mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, minimizing disruption and risk.

I am particularly drawn to this role because it blends strategic leadership with operational excellence, aligning with my strengths in partnering with HR, Finance, and Technology teams. My strong communication skills allow me to convey complex payroll concepts to senior leaders effectively.

I am eager to contribute to The Cigna Group's mission of improving health and vitality. Thank you for considering my application.

How would you ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations when managing payroll for over 65,000 employees across multiple entities?
I would establish a robust compliance framework including regular audits, stay updated on regulatory changes through subscriptions and legal counsel, and implement automated controls within Workday to flag discrepancies. I would also conduct training for the payroll team and vendors.
Describe your experience leading payroll system implementations or significant upgrades, particularly with Workday Payroll.
In my previous role, I led the implementation of Workday Payroll, Time, and Absence modules for a company with 20,000 employees. I managed the project from requirements gathering through go-live, coordinating with IT, HR, and vendors. This included configuring pay groups, tax setups, and integrations with finance systems.
How do you manage vendor relationships to ensure service performance and continuous improvement?
I establish clear SLAs and KPIs, hold regular performance reviews, and conduct quarterly business reviews. I also foster a partnership approach by sharing our strategic goals and seeking vendor input on best practices. If issues arise, I escalate promptly and work on corrective action plans.
Walk me through how you would handle payroll activities during a merger or acquisition. What key risks do you consider?
I would start by conducting due diligence on the target's payroll processes, systems, and compliance status. Then, I'd create a transition plan that includes harmonizing pay policies, tax registrations, and integration with Workday. Key risks include data integrity, tax compliance, and employee communication. I'd mitigate these by testing integrations, parallel runs, and clear communication to employees.
How do you maintain strong internal controls and SOX compliance in payroll?
I implement segregation of duties, require dual approvals for changes to master data and off-cycle payments, and conduct periodic audits. I also document all processes and controls, ensure proper access controls in Workday, and work with internal audit for annual testing. Any deficiencies are addressed promptly with remediation plans.
