Key Skills

Payroll Processing Multi-State Payroll Oracle HCM ADP Smart Compliance Excel Tax Compliance Garnishments Deductions Communication Attention to Detail

I am excited to apply for the Payroll Coordinator position at Datavant. With over 3 years of progressive payroll experience in multi-state and high-volume environments, I have developed a strong proficiency in Oracle and ADP systems, ensuring accuracy in tax withholdings and compliance. My attention to detail and analytical skills have consistently led to error-free payroll processing and positive audit results.

In my previous role at a large healthcare organization, I managed weekly payroll for 5,000 employees across multiple legal entities, handling complex deductions and garnishments. I also spearheaded a system upgrade that reduced processing time by 20% while improving data integrity. I am passionate about leveraging technology to streamline payroll processes and support employee satisfaction.

I am drawn to Datavant’s mission of making health data secure and accessible, and I am eager to contribute to a collaborative team that values innovation. My experience in hyper-growth environments has taught me to adapt quickly and prioritize effectively under tight deadlines. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my skills align with your needs.

Can you describe your experience with multi-state payroll tax compliance and how you stay updated on changing regulations?
In my previous role, I handled payroll for employees in over 20 states, ensuring proper tax setup and withholding. I subscribe to IRS updates and attend quarterly webinars to stay current. For example, I recently managed a tax jurisdiction change for a new state, coordinating with the ADP team to update tax codes and avoid penalties.
How do you ensure accuracy when processing high-volume payrolls for multiple legal entities?
I use a combination of system validations and manual checks. For instance, I run pre-processing reports in Oracle to verify totals against expected amounts, then reconcile post-processing reports. I also maintain a detailed checklist to ensure no steps are missed, which has resulted in zero material errors over two years.
Describe a time you had to handle a payroll discrepancy or an employee inquiry about their pay. How did you resolve it?
An employee reported an underpayment due to a missed overtime entry. I investigated by reviewing time records and payroll reports, identified the error, and initiated a manual adjustment. I communicated the resolution to the employee within 24 hours and updated our time tracking process to prevent recurrence.
How proficient are you with Excel, and can you give an example of using advanced functions to improve payroll processes?
I am advanced in Excel, using pivot tables and VLOOKUPs to analyze payroll data. For example, I created a macro that automatically reconciles gross-to-net calculations, reducing manual review time by 30% and catching discrepancies early. I also use conditional formatting to highlight anomalies in large datasets.
How do you prioritize tasks when faced with tight deadlines and multiple competing priorities from different stakeholders?
I use a priority matrix to assess urgency and impact. For payroll deadlines, compliance tasks come first. I communicate with stakeholders about timelines and set expectations. During peak periods, I break down tasks into smaller steps and delegate where possible, ensuring critical deadlines are met without sacrificing quality.
