Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Senior Director, Procurement role at GitLab. With over a decade of experience in procurement leadership within fast-paced technology companies, I have a proven track record of building scalable procurement functions and driving strategic vendor relationships. At my previous role, I led the transformation of procurement operations, implementing AI-driven tools that reduced cycle times by 30% and delivered significant cost savings. I am particularly drawn to GitLab's all-remote culture and its commitment to leveraging AI for efficiency. I am confident that my expertise in strategic sourcing, risk management, and team development will help GitLab achieve its procurement goals. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to your team.

Can you describe a time when you transformed a procurement function in a fast-growing company?
At my previous company, we experienced rapid growth, and the procurement process was manual and fragmented. I led a cross-functional team to implement an AI-driven procurement system, automated purchase orders, and established clear policies. This reduced approval times by 40% and improved compliance, enabling the company to scale efficiently.
How do you approach building relationships with hyperscaler vendors like AWS or GCP?
I would take a 360-degree view of the partnership, focusing not just on commercial terms but also on joint go-to-market opportunities and product co-development. I would schedule regular executive business reviews, align incentives, and ensure both sides derive value. For example, I recently negotiated a multi-year agreement with a major cloud provider that included both discounts and co-marketing credits.
How do you measure success in procurement?
Success is measured through KPIs including cost savings, cycle time reduction, vendor performance, and stakeholder satisfaction. I also track automation adoption and policy compliance. In my last role, we reduced procurement cycle time by 25% and achieved 95% policy compliance within a year.
Describe your experience with implementing AI in procurement.
I have implemented AI for contract analysis, spend categorization, and predictive analytics. For instance, I deployed a tool that used natural language processing to extract key terms from contracts, reducing review time by 60%. I also used machine learning to identify savings opportunities based on spending patterns.
How do you handle conflict with stakeholders who want to bypass procurement processes?
I believe in understanding the root cause of the resistance. Often it's due to cumbersome processes. I would engage the stakeholder to redesign the process to be faster while maintaining controls. For example, I introduced a fast-track approval for low-risk purchases, which increased adoption and reduced friction.

As the Senior Director, Procurement, you’ll help shape how GitLab builds and scales procurement in a fast-growing, all-remote company. In this role, you’ll create and manage a procurement strategy that supports company goals while improving operational efficiency, managing risk, and building clear, practical processes that work across teams. You’ll guide policies, systems, and purchase controls that support responsible growth, and you’ll partner closely with stakeholders across the business to make procurement a trusted, effective function. This role is a strong fit for someone who can balance strategy and execution, strengthen team performance, and build a procurement organization that delivers consistency, speed, and sound judgment.

What you’ll do

  • Lead hyperscaler and strategic vendor relationships with a 360-degree view across commercial terms, GTM incentives, product co-development opportunities, and partner program value
  • Have an ownership mindset – drive the function forward with speed whilst not sacrificing quality to deliver impact for internal stakeholders.
  • Create, communicate, and execute a procurement strategy that supports GitLab’s business objectives and improves operational efficiency, risk management, and scalable decision-making.
  • Own procurement policies, practices, and systems that help the business scale while managing risk and improving efficiency. Challenge the status quo and be a change agent.
  • Develop procurement processes, systems, and purchase controls to support compliance, increase policy adoption, and improve operational efficiency across teams.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, external auditors, and advisors to improve procurement, negotiation, audit, and accounting processes.
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships to understand business needs, improve the team member experience, and ensure procurement programs deliver value.
  • Lead vendor negotiation strategy and support negotiations to achieve stronger pricing, favorable terms, and measurable business value.
  • Build an AI-first procurement function — actively identifying where automation, AI tooling, and modern workflows can replace manual work, reduce cycle times, and free the team to focus on higher-value decisions.
  • Define team KPIs, identify root causes behind performance gaps, and lead improvement plans that increase procurement efficiency and team performance.
  • Lead and develop the procurement team to improve accountability, strengthen performance, and support professional growth in alignment with GitLab’s values.

What you’ll bring

  • Significant experience in procurement within a technology company, including experience leading procurement teams.
  • A strong track record of building procurement strategies, operating models, and controls that support growth and consistency.
  • Good judgment grounded in industry knowledge, practical experience, and an awareness of business tradeoffs.
  • The ability to assess broad stakeholder needs and adapt to current and emerging policies, practices, trends, and business requirements.
  • Strong operational skills with experience improving procure-to-pay processes for speed, consistency, and quality.
  • Experience developing vendor negotiation strategies and managing supplier relationships with a focus on business value.
  • An outcomes-focused leadership style with experience setting goals, improving team performance, and helping others grow.
  • The ability to create solutions that meet current business needs while building a foundation for future scale in an asynchronous, cross-functional environment.
