Email Marketing A/B Testing Conversion Optimization Growth Marketing Customer.io Mixpanel Data Analysis Experimentation CRO Marketing Strategy

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Email Growth Manager position at Ruby Labs. With over 4 years of experience in email marketing and conversion rate optimization, I have a proven track record of driving significant growth through data-driven experimentation. At my previous company, I led A/B testing initiatives that increased email conversion rates by 25% and revenue per email by 18%.

My proficiency in Customer.io, Mixpanel, and statistical analysis aligns perfectly with your need for a results-obsessed growth expert. I thrive on generating hypotheses, designing rigorous tests, and scaling winners, which I understand is core to this role. I am eager to bring my experimentation mindset to Ruby Labs and contribute to its innovative consumer products.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can drive growth for your brands.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe a time when you designed an A/B test that significantly improved conversion rates. What was your hypothesis, how did you design the test, and what were the results?
At my previous job, we hypothesized that adding urgency (countdown timer) to our email CTA would increase click-through rates. We split the list into control (no timer) and variant (timer), ran for two weeks, and achieved a 15% lift in conversions with statistical significance. We then rolled out the timer across all campaigns.
How do you prioritize which experiments to run given limited resources?
I use a framework like ICE (Impact, Confidence, Ease) or PXL to score each hypothesis. I prioritize experiments that have high potential impact on core KPIs (e.g., conversion rate) and are relatively easy to implement. I also consider strategic alignment and learning value.
Walk me through how you would analyze the results of an A/B test to ensure statistical validity.
I calculate sample size needed before the test, use a significance level of 95%, and check for peeking. After collecting data, I run a chi-square or t-test depending on metric. I also look at practical significance and segment results by customer type to uncover hidden insights.
This role focuses on growing email as a conversion channel across multiple brands. How would you approach creating a unified experimentation roadmap?
I would start by auditing current email performance per brand, identifying low-hanging fruit. Then I'd build a prioritized list of hypotheses based on customer journey stages (welcome, nurture, etc.). I'd coordinate with brand teams to ensure tests are replicated across brands for scaling, while respecting brand voice differences.
Can you give an example of a time you used competitive intelligence to inform your email strategy?
I regularly monitored competitors' email flows and noticed they were using personalized product recommendations. We hadn't tested that, so we implemented a similar feature using customer purchase history. This resulted in a 12% increase in click-to-conversion rate for our nurture flows.

About the role

Ruby Labs is looking for a results-obsessed Email Growth Manager to join our Email Marketing department and report directly to the Marketing Director. This is a high-impact, data-driven role built for someone who lives and breathes conversion optimisation and growth experimentation.

Unlike traditional email marketing roles, your mandate here is singular: grow email marketing as a conversion channel across all Ruby Labs brands. You will not be executing campaigns or managing day-to-day flows,iInstead, you will be the engine behind our experimentation culture. Your days will be spent generating hypotheses, designing A/B tests, analysing results, rolling out winners at scale, and obsessively studying the competitive landscape to identify opportunities we haven’t explored yet.

You will work closely with the Email Lead, Email Marketing Specialists, and the broader Marketing and Data teams to ensure every experiment is actionable, every insight is implemented, and every winning idea moves the needle on sign-ups and conversions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conversion Growth Strategy: Develop and maintain a structured experimentation roadmap, continuously generating and prioritising hypotheses to improve email conversion rates and grow email marketing as a sign-up channel across all Ruby Labs brands.

  • A/B Testing & Experimentation: Ideate, design, and launch A/B and multivariate tests on subject lines, preview text, email copy, CTAs, send times, sequences, and full funnel flows, with a relentless focus on improving conversion metrics.

  • Results Analysis & Rollout: Analyse test results with statistical rigour, extract clear insights, document learnings, and roll out winning experiments across all brands at scale.

  • Competitive Intelligence: Continuously monitor competitors’ email strategies. Including their flows, offers, messaging, frequency, and design, to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for Ruby Labs to capitalize on.

  • Email Sequence Ideation: Conceptualise and propose new email sequences, lifecycle flows, and campaign structures focused on driving sign-ups and conversions, collaborating with the email team on implementation.

  • Performance Ownership: Track, report on, and own key growth KPIs including conversion rate, sign-up share from email, revenue per email, and lift from experiments.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Email Lead, Email Marketing Specialists, Marketing Director, and Data Analysts to align on growth priorities and ensure experiments are properly instrumented and measurable.

  • Tool Utilisation: Identify and leverage opportunities within our email tooling (Customer.io, Mixpanel) to unlock new testing and segmentation capabilities that support growth goals.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience in email marketing, growth marketing, or CRO, with a demonstrable track record of improving conversion metrics through experimentation.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Solid experience with Customer.io or equivalent email automation platforms (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Brevo).

    • Proficiency in Mixpanel or similar analytics tools for experiment tracking and conversion analysis.

    • Strong understanding of A/B testing methodology, statistical significance, and experiment design.

  • Growth Orientation: Growth mindset with an obsessive focus on conversion metrics. You think in funnels, lift percentages, and test-learn-iterate cycles.

  • Data-Driven Thinking: Highly analytical. You are comfortable pulling data, building reports, and making evidence-based decisions. You know the difference between a meaningful result and noise.

  • Creative Hypothesis Generation: A natural ideator who generates a high volume of creative, testable hypotheses and knows how to prioritise them by potential impact.

  • AI Proficiency: Strong command of AI tools is a must. We expect this person to integrate AI into their daily workflow. From copy generation and experiment ideation to competitive research and data analysis. We leverage AI to maximize output and efficiency.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to write clear, compelling email copy for test variants is a strong advantage.

  • Experience with Digital Products: Experience working with subscription-based or direct-to-consumer digital products is required.
