Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Manager, Engineering - Catalog role at iHerb. With over 8 years of software engineering experience, including 3 years as a team lead, I have a strong track record of delivering full-stack features and leading engineering teams. I am particularly drawn to this role because of its focus on AI-driven development and the opportunity to shape the future of the catalog platform.

In my current role at a leading e-commerce company, I have successfully integrated AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot into our daily workflows, resulting in a 30% increase in development velocity. I am experienced in sprint planning, hiring, and setting technical standards, and I thrive in a player-coach capacity where I can both code and mentor.

I am confident that my background in full-stack development, particularly with C# and React, combined with my leadership experience, makes me a strong fit for this position. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to iHerb's AI transformation.

Describe a time when you had to balance hands-on coding with managing a team. How did you prioritize your time?
I prioritize by blocking out focused coding time for critical features or technical debt, while being available for team members during designated office hours. For example, I set aside the first two hours of each day for deep work, and reserve afternoons for meetings and code reviews.
How have you integrated AI tools into your development workflow? What guardrails did you implement?
I use GitHub Copilot for code suggestions and Claude Code for complex refactoring. I implemented guardrails such as requiring code reviews for all AI-generated code and running automated security scans. Additionally, I maintain a set of coding standards that the AI must adhere to, and regularly review generated code for correctness.
Can you give an example of how you handled a situation where a team member was underperforming?
I had a junior engineer who was struggling with code quality. I set up weekly one-on-ones to review their code and provide constructive feedback. We also paired on a few tasks to demonstrate best practices. After three months, their performance improved significantly, and they became a reliable contributor.
Explain a complex technical decision you made recently. How did you ensure alignment with product and design teams?
We were deciding between microservices and a modular monolith for our catalog service. I created a concise document outlining trade-offs and presented it to product and design teams. We held a session to discuss impact on delivery speed and maintainability. The final decision was a modular monolith to reduce initial complexity while allowing future extraction.
How do you stay current with new technologies, especially in AI?
I follow AI conferences like NeurIPS and industry blogs. I also experiment with new tools in side projects. For instance, I recently tested Cursor for AI-assisted development and documented the findings. I encourage my team to spend 10% of their time on learning and share insights during our weekly tech talks.

Job Summary:

The Manager, Engineering – Catalog role is at the heart of iHerb’s AI transformation. This role will lead a lean, high-seniority team of engineers while staying hands-on as a player-coach.
