Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Executive Communications and Content Manager role at Chainguard. My background in executive communications, narrative development, and high-impact content creation equips me to translate complex technical and strategic topics into distinctive stories for developer, security, and business audiences.

I am comfortable partnering directly with senior leaders, shaping authentic executive voices, and managing multiple content streams and deadlines from concept through publication. I would welcome the opportunity to help Chainguard's executives and customers build credible thought leadership that reinforces the company’s mission in secure open source software.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to Chainguard’s communications and content strategy.

Sample interview questions
How would you develop an authentic thought-leadership voice for an executive?

I would begin with interviews and a review of existing communications, speeches, and social posts to identify the executive’s expertise, natural language, convictions, and audience. I would document a voice and narrative framework, then create a repeatable editorial cadence that connects individual perspectives to company priorities while preserving authenticity.

Describe your approach to turning a complex technical subject into compelling content.

I would first clarify the technical fact pattern with subject-matter experts, then identify the audience’s practical problem and the business implication. I would use plain language, a strong narrative structure, and concrete examples, while retaining the technical precision developers and security professionals expect.

How would you manage competing deadlines across multiple executives and content channels?

I would maintain a visible editorial calendar that shows priorities, owners, deadlines, approvals, channels, and dependencies for every executive. I would establish clear intake and review processes, reserve capacity for timely company moments, and communicate early when trade-offs or executive decisions are needed.

How do you measure whether executive thought leadership is effective?

I would connect the content to a defined goal, such as audience growth, engagement quality, event invitations, media interest, pipeline influence, or message adoption. I would pair quantitative channel metrics with qualitative feedback from sales, PR, customers, and the executives themselves to refine future content.

How would you push back when an executive’s requested content direction is unlikely to serve the audience or company narrative?

I would approach the conversation with a clear recommendation, the strategic reason behind it, and a lower-effort alternative where appropriate. I would respect the executive’s time and voice, but use the agreed business objective, audience needs, and publication deadline to help reach a decision and keep work moving.

The role, in a nutshell:

We’re looking for an Executive Communications and Content Manager to help our executive team and community show up in the market with sharp, distinctive points of view. This role is fundamentally a thought leadership and content role: you’ll spend most of your time writing and creating content (blog posts, bylines, social content, video, and talking points) that carry our company narrative through the distinct voice of each spokesperson who delivers it.

You’ll work across Chainguard’s executive team, developing a narrative for each leader while keeping their storytelling aligned with broader company moments, launches, and campaigns. You’ll also help extend that same thought leadership lens to our customers, highlighting their perspectives and insights as part of our content strategy. This is a role for a strong writer and storyteller who thrives on variety, juggles multiple voices and deadlines without losing quality, and knows how to translate complex topics into narratives that land with developer, security, and business audiences.

What you’ll do:

  • Executive thought leadership content: Develop and write blog posts, bylines, video, and long-form pieces that build our executives’ individual points of view and reputations in the security and open source communities.
  • Customer thought leadership: Work with Chainguard customers to develop content that showcases their industry leadership and how they’re using Chainguard.
  • Executive social presence: Manage and write social content for our executive team, turning ideas, moments, and company news into posts that sound authentically like each person.
  • Spokesperson prep: Shape narratives, talking points, and prep materials to help executives show up with a clear story at external engagements, such as podcasts, events, and webinars.
  • Narrative translation: Turn technical and strategic topics into stories that land with developer, security, and business audiences.
  • Cross-functional alignment: Work with Marketing, PR, and Events to make sure executive storytelling reinforces broader company narratives, launches, and campaigns.
  • Content operations: Own the external content calendar for each executive you support, and manage the process end to end.

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience in executive communications, public relations, content/brand storytelling, journalism, or a related writing-intensive role. In-house experience is a plus.
  • Ability to manage content across multiple executives, channels, and deadlines, without dropping the ball.
  • A storyteller’s instinct: you can spot the narrative in a piece of news, a customer moment, or an executive’s offhand idea, and turn it into content that resonates.
  • Excellent writing and messaging skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Comfort operating with confidence around senior execs, including knowing when to push back or nudge them to keep things moving.
  • Proven success in cross-functional, highly collaborative roles.
  • Bonus: experience working in highly technical or developer-facing organizations.
