Sample interview questions
I would explain the baseline service and cost issues, the carrier and lane data I analyzed, the changes implemented, and the measurable outcome. For example, I might describe consolidating volume with high-performing carriers, revising lane allocation, and improving on-time delivery while reducing cost per shipment.
I use a clear scorecard covering on-time delivery, collection reliability, scan compliance, claims or damage rates, cost per shipment, capacity performance, and customer-impact metrics. I review results regularly with carriers, agree corrective actions with owners and dates, and track whether improvements are sustained.
I ensure product, commercial, and shipping data are complete and accurate before dispatch, including commodity classification, origin, valuation, and required documentation. I maintain documented processes with brokers and carriers, monitor regulatory changes, and audit exceptions to prevent recurring clearance delays.
I would avoid treating the lowest unit cost as the only objective and assess total cost, including failed deliveries, claims, delays, and customer contacts. I segment lanes and services by customer promise, volume, risk, and urgency, then use performance data to select the most cost-effective option that protects agreed service levels.
I would first map the carrier portfolio, lanes, costs, service levels, customs processes, and key stakeholders. Next, I would establish a practical performance dashboard and identify high-impact issues such as expensive lanes, recurring delivery failures, or compliance bottlenecks. I would then prioritize a small set of measurable improvements while developing a longer-term network optimization roadmap.
