Sample interview questions
How have you developed a sourcing strategy for an apparel category with aggressive lead-time and margin targets?

I start by segmenting the category by volume, complexity, margin opportunity, and supply risk. I then build a multi-source plan with clear supplier scorecards covering cost, quality, capacity, lead time, and compliance, and review performance regularly to rebalance volume and address risks.

Describe a time you improved cost while protecting product quality in an apparel program.

I partnered with a supplier and product-development team to break down material, labor, wash, trim, and packaging costs. By adjusting construction details and consolidating component purchasing without changing the intended customer experience, we reduced landed cost while maintaining fit, testing, and quality standards.

What criteria do you use to qualify a new bottoms-apparel factory?

I assess technical expertise in the category, capacity, lead-time reliability, quality systems, financial stability, compliance, communication practices, and willingness to operate with transparent data. I also validate sample execution and production readiness through pilot orders before assigning meaningful volume.

How would you manage a supplier that is missing replenishment lead-time commitments?

I would first use production and logistics data to identify whether the constraint is materials, capacity, approvals, planning, or transportation. I would agree on a corrective-action plan with owners and dates, monitor it through frequent checkpoints, and protect availability through contingency capacity or alternate suppliers where needed.

How do you build productive relationships with both suppliers and internal merchandising teams?

I establish shared commercial and operational goals, communicate trade-offs early, and use fact-based reviews rather than reactive escalation. With suppliers, I combine clear performance expectations with practical coaching; internally, I translate factory constraints and sourcing options into decisions that support product, customer, and margin goals.

  • Train suppliers on Quince OS, including operational efficiency (rapid lead times, consumer focus), financial modeling (high ROIC), and technical capabilities (Vendor Portal).
  • Product Expansion: Collaborate with Merchants and Product Development teams to introduce new styles and colors approved through our NPC process.
  • Drive Operational Excellence:
    • Ensure high-quality standards (<0.5% defect rate).
    • Optimize supply chain for speed and accuracy (Replenishment Lead Time < 14 days).
    • Maintain inventory availability (>99% in-stock).
    • Improve margin accretion through cost efficiencies and strategic sourcing.
  • Conduct Monthly/Quarterly Business Reviews with supplier management, analyzing strategy, performance highlights, and areas for improvement.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 8+ years of experience in Strategic Sourcing, Procurement, or Supplier Management with major U.S.-based retailers.
