Sample interview questions
How would you build an international communications strategy that remains globally consistent while being relevant in local markets?

I would begin with a global narrative architecture, including core messages, proof points, audiences, and non-negotiable brand principles. I would then work with regional marketing leaders and local experts to identify market-specific priorities, media dynamics, cultural considerations, and customer stories. This creates a consistent strategic foundation with localized execution plans, measurable earned-media goals, and clear feedback loops.

Describe your approach to managing PR agencies across multiple countries or regions.

I set agencies up with clear objectives, priority narratives, target audiences, operating cadences, and outcome-based KPIs rather than activity-only measures. Regular performance reviews should assess quality of coverage, message pull-through, journalist relationships, responsiveness, and contribution to business priorities. I also maintain direct relationships with priority media so agency support complements, rather than replaces, internal leadership.

How would you handle a fast-moving reputational issue affecting several international markets?

I would quickly establish a cross-functional response team, validate facts, assess stakeholder impact by market, and determine whether a global or localized response is appropriate. I would prepare holding statements, spokesperson guidance, Q&A materials, and an approval process that enables speed without sacrificing accuracy. After resolution, I would review coverage, sentiment, and internal learnings to strengthen the crisis playbook.

What metrics would you use to evaluate the effectiveness of an international communications program?

I would combine quantitative and qualitative measures: share of voice, quality and tier of coverage, message pull-through, sentiment, spokesperson visibility, analyst engagement, referral traffic, and campaign support for product or market priorities. I would report results by region and audience, while connecting communications outcomes to broader awareness, reputation, and demand-generation objectives where attribution is feasible.

How do you make complex product or business topics compelling to journalists and external audiences?

I translate technical or organizational complexity into a clear audience problem, a differentiated point of view, credible evidence, and a human story. I work closely with product, customer, and subject-matter experts to identify what is genuinely new or consequential, then tailor the angle and language to each audience. Strong preparation ensures spokespeople can communicate simply, accurately, and confidently.
