Sample interview questions
I would first validate the alert and check filesystem utilization with commands such as df and du to identify the affected mount and the largest directories. I would review recent logs, deployments, temporary files, backups, and application behavior, then follow the incident process to escalate or remediate safely. After resolving the immediate issue, I would document the root cause and recommend monitoring thresholds, cleanup automation, or capacity changes to prevent recurrence.
Infrastructure as code defines and manages infrastructure through version-controlled configuration rather than manual console changes. It improves repeatability, reviewability, consistency across environments, and disaster recovery. Tools such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Terraform, or cloud-native templates can reduce configuration drift and repetitive operational work.
I would provide a concise update describing the impact, affected service, start time, current status, and immediate mitigation underway. I would avoid speculation, state the next expected update time, and tailor technical detail to the audience. Once resolved, I would help prepare a clear RCA covering cause, corrective actions, owners, and prevention measures.
I would begin with the architecture and operational requirements, including identity and access management, networking, compute options, storage, observability, security controls, availability, and cost. Each provider has comparable services but different terminology, configuration patterns, and integration options. I would use approved architecture standards and automation to deploy consistently while validating monitoring, access, backups, and recovery procedures.
I would analyze alert frequency, severity, related metrics, and whether the alert corresponds to meaningful customer impact. I would refine thresholds, duration windows, deduplication, and routing while preserving detection of genuine incidents. If the alert reflects a recurring condition, I would investigate the underlying cause and automate remediation or create a durable engineering fix.
Mactores is the agent-native AWS modernization firm. Most modernization work doesn’t ship, it stalls in pilots, slips a year, or lands at three times the budget. We exist to ship it: production systems running, legacy retired, outcomes measured. Our delivery is built on Aedeon, the agent platform built by Mactores’ founders’ sister company, which absorbs the repetitive 60–70% of engagement work, discovery, dependency mapping, validation, test generation, that traditional consulting bills human hours against. Forward-deployed engineers own the rest: architecture, judgment, and cutover, on dates we commit to in the contract.
This is where you learn the agent-native craft from the operational side. Customer production systems don’t care what time it is someone has to keep them healthy, catch problems before customers feel them, and turn repeat toil into automation. As a Cloud Engineer intern on the team behind our infrastructure and application modernization work, you’ll configure, deploy, and troubleshoot enterprise software in real customer environments, with senior engineers around you making the architecture calls.
You won’t own cutover that’s the forward-deployed engineers’ job. You’ll build the foundations that make cutover possible: solid Linux administration, disciplined monitoring, clear communication when something breaks. Because you’re troubleshooting customers’ production deployments, clear communication and a genuine drive to help customers succeed aren’t nice-to-haves here. They’re the job.
What you will do
- Implement the cloud architectures defined by the Solutions Architect on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
- Work on the team supporting customer cloud deployments in a 24×7 operational support system.
- Monitor customer production infrastructure in 24×7 rotational shifts, and improve monitoring and alerting through the right use of automation tools.
- Prepare customers’ monthly operational reports and present them on schedule.
- Help the team identify and adopt new technologies.
- Use off-the-shelf and open-source tools Chef, scripting languages, and similar to manage infrastructure reliably and stay resilient when systems misbehave.
- Maintain and improve existing enterprise infrastructure.
What do you need for this opportunity
- Strong Windows/Linux systems administration skills, including migrating and architecting complex multi-tier applications to private or public cloud infrastructure.
- Communication skills verbal and written to update customers and internal teams on issues, escalations, and RCAs.
- The ability to communicate architecture visually to customers and internal teams.
You will be preferred if
- Prior experience in working on AWS, GCP, and Azure
- Certifications AWS Cloud Solutions Architect Associate / Professional RHEL Certified Engineer/Azure Certifications/Snowflake Certifications.
- Configuration management experience – Ansible, Chef, Puppet
How we work?
Mactores delivers through agents plus forward-deployed engineers. Aedeon, the agent platform we deploy, handles the repetitive majority of engagement work; engineers handle judgment and cutover. As an intern, you sit at the start of that pipeline learning how production AWS systems actually behave, how automation replaces toil, and how a firm that commits to fixed delivery dates keeps its operational house in order. Do this well and the path leads toward the engineering work that owns outcomes.
