Sample interview questions
How would you design a scalable Playwright automation framework for a growing web application?

I would establish a layered structure with reusable page objects or component abstractions, clear test fixtures, environment-specific configuration, and centralized reporting. I would keep test data independent where possible, use stable selectors, enforce coding standards, and make the framework easy to extend through documentation and examples.

How do you decide whether a scenario should be tested through the UI, API, or both?

I use API tests for fast validation of business rules, data setup, and edge cases, while UI tests verify critical user journeys and client-side integration. For high-value workflows, I may combine them by setting up data through APIs and validating the user outcome in the UI, which improves speed and reliability.

What steps would you take to reduce flaky tests in a CI/CD pipeline?

I would first categorize failures using logs, screenshots, traces, and timing data to distinguish product defects from test instability. Common fixes include replacing arbitrary waits with condition-based waits, isolating test data, avoiding shared state, improving environment readiness checks, and running safe retries only after addressing root causes.

Describe how you would integrate Playwright tests into a CI/CD workflow.

I would configure the pipeline to install dependencies, provision required environment variables, run tests in parallel where capacity allows, and publish reports and artifacts such as traces and screenshots. I would use targeted smoke suites for pull requests, broader regression suites on scheduled or pre-release runs, and clear quality gates based on agreed reliability thresholds.

How do you communicate a test failure or quality risk to developers and product stakeholders?

I provide a concise report containing the impact, reproducible steps, expected versus actual behavior, affected environment, and supporting evidence. I also state whether the issue blocks release, propose a priority based on user and business risk, and work collaboratively with the team to confirm root cause and retest the fix.
