Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the reconciliation period and verify that all bank transactions and ledger entries were complete. I would then compare unmatched items, review supporting documentation and timing differences, trace the issue to its source, and document both the resolution and any corrective entry needed.
I would begin by defining required fields, valid formats, and control totals. I would use Excel tools such as filters, conditional formatting, lookup functions, duplicate checks, and pivot tables to identify exceptions, then validate corrections against source records and retain an audit trail of changes.
A journal entry records an accounting event in the general ledger so financial statements reflect the correct activity and period. Before posting, I would confirm the account coding, amount, date, supporting documentation, appropriate approvals, and that debits equal credits.
I would provide a concise summary of the variance, quantify its amount and percentage impact, explain the identified or likely drivers, and cite the supporting data. I would also clearly note any unresolved assumptions, recommend next steps, and communicate the potential reporting impact.
Either tool could automate importing and standardizing source files, matching transactions based on predefined rules, flagging exceptions, and generating a reconciliation summary. I would validate the automated output against a manual sample, build clear exception handling, and preserve review controls rather than automating away accountability.
