Sample interview questions
Describe a 0–1 product or major feature you designed from ambiguity through launch.

I would explain the initial problem and assumptions, how I aligned stakeholders on outcomes, the research and prototyping approach I used, key trade-offs, and the measurable impact after release. I would also cover what I learned and how those insights influenced subsequent iterations.

How would you simplify a complex cybersecurity or compliance workflow for users with different levels of expertise?

I would begin by mapping user roles, jobs to be done, decisions, and pain points with domain experts and customers. I would prioritize the critical workflow, progressively disclose advanced detail, use clear risk-oriented language and visual hierarchy, then validate comprehension through usability testing.

How do you partner with product managers and engineers when product requirements are unclear?

I bring the group back to the user problem, desired outcome, constraints, and hypotheses rather than waiting for a complete specification. I use lightweight concepts and prototypes to create shared understanding, document decisions, and collaborate early with engineering on feasibility and implementation trade-offs.

What is your approach to contributing to a design system while delivering product work?

I identify recurring UI patterns and assess whether existing components meet the product need before creating new ones. When a gap exists, I collaborate with designers and engineers to define component behavior, accessibility, variants, documentation, and adoption plans so the system improves without slowing delivery.

How do you use research, customer feedback, and analytics to refine a shipped experience?

I combine qualitative feedback with behavioral data to distinguish isolated requests from systemic usability issues. I define success metrics before changes, investigate the underlying cause through sessions or interviews where needed, test improvements, and monitor post-release results to guide further iteration.

Who are we?

At UpGuard, we are replacing manual security bottlenecks with AI-driven precision. Fresh off a US$75M Series C, we are scaling our infrastructure to process 100 billion risk signals daily. This isn’t just growth; it’s a total reimagining of how the world manages cyber risk.

We build the Cyber Risk Posture Management (CRPM) platform that security teams actually love. By integrating security ratings, threat intel, and agentic AI, we empower organisations to stay ahead of an ever evolving attack surface.

We aren’t just building another tool; we’re defining a category. We provide the autonomy to ship world-class technology and the resources to do it at a global scale.

Where does this role fit in?
We are currently hiring for two Senior Product Designer headcounts across distinct teams: both are in the 0-1 phase. During the interview process, we’ll work with you to determine which team best matches your background and interests.

As a Senior Product Designer at UpGuard, you’ll play a pivotal role leading design strategy and vision across our rapidly growing cybersecurity SaaS platform. Depending on your team alignment, you will either drive disruption in an established domain or build a new 0–1 product experience looking at the risks introduced by AI. Working closely with Product, Engineering, Data, and domain experts, you’ll take complex risk management concepts and high-level opportunities and turn them into thoughtful, scalable designs and prototypes.

What will you do?

  • Lead the design strategy, vision, and execution of end-to-end product experiences, taking features from early concept (including 0–1 greenfield initiatives) through to polished release and iteration.

  • Partner with PMs, engineers, and subject matter experts to shape feature direction, product architecture, and strategic design decisions.

  • Align on discovery efforts, lead generative research plans, run user interviews, and translate complex compliance and risk insights into clear product opportunities.

  • Prototype and test ideas at the right level of fidelity for each stage of the process, enabling rapid validation and continuous learning.

  • Improve core user flows by simplifying complex domain requirements into intuitive, high-clarity user interfaces.

  • Contribute to our design system, expanding components or establishing new patterns and help raise the bar on overall design quality and maturity across teams.

  • Refine designs using feedback from customers, early user testing, and product analytics.

  • Collaborate with engineers to build, test, and ship high-quality product experiences.

What will you bring?

  • Experience: 5+ years of commercial product design experience, with a proven track record of setting design vision, shipping simple, intuitive user experiences, and optionally taking products or major features from 0–1.

  • Craft: You care deeply about quality, balancing visual polish with sharp problem framing. Your portfolio demonstrates strong interaction and visual design, along with clear thinking about vision, user impact, and measurable outcomes.

  • Proactivity: You take initiative, seek clarity, and drive your work forward without needing hand-holding. You’re comfortable owning products end-to-end and navigating domain ambiguity with confidence.

  • Systems: Experience contributing to and evolving design systems alongside engineers and designers. You also help shape internal processes that improve collaboration, quality, and velocity.

  • Communication: Clear communicator who articulates design strategy well, gives actionable feedback, and works smoothly with remote teams.

  • Collaboration: A low-ego, team-first approach to working with PMs, engineers, and other designers, you know when to lead, when to support, and how to uplift others.

  • Growth mindset: You’re always looking to improve, open to feedback, and proactive about learning. You draw inspiration from industry best practice and apply it thoughtfully to your work.

  • Tools: You have strong experience with Figma and use it to efficiently create production-ready designs. You’re comfortable with modern tooling and staying up to date as the ecosystem evolves.

What will give you an edge?

  • Prior experience in Product Management or leading product strategy.

  • Hands-on experience designing 0–1 products, complex B2B SaaS software, or risk/compliance management tools.

  • Experience in cybersecurity, AI agents, or autonomous systems. (If not, a strong willingness to learn the domain).

  • Experience working in fast-paced, agile software development teams.

  • Experience designing for a multilingual audience.
