Sample interview questions
Describe your experience processing payroll across multiple countries or through EOR providers.

I would explain the countries and vendors supported, my end-to-end responsibilities, and how I maintained country-specific calendars, tax requirements, approvals, and audit records. I would emphasize a structured pre-payroll validation process and clear escalation paths for jurisdiction-specific issues.

How do you ensure payroll inputs are accurate before a pay run is finalized?

I use documented cutoffs, reconciled change reports, approval workflows, and reasonableness checks against prior-period payroll. I validate new hires, terminations, salary changes, deductions, bonuses, and exceptions with HR and Finance, then retain evidence of review and approvals.

Tell us about a complex payroll discrepancy you resolved.

I would outline the issue, assess employee and compliance impact, trace the source data through HRIS, payroll, and finance records, and coordinate a correction with the relevant vendor or internal teams. I would also describe the preventive control or process improvement implemented afterward.

How would you support payroll compliance and audit readiness across several jurisdictions?

I would maintain a compliance calendar for filings, remittances, year-end obligations, and legislative changes, supported by documented controls and retention practices. For audits, I would provide reconciliations, approval trails, system-access evidence, and timely responses while safeguarding confidential employee data.

What approach would you take to improving a manual payroll workflow?

I would first map the current process, quantify error risks and processing time, and identify root causes such as duplicate data entry or unclear ownership. I would then propose standardized templates, system integrations or configuration changes, validation rules, pilot testing, and measurable post-implementation controls.
