About this role.
Cloudbeds is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Payments team to build secure, scalable systems supporting global hospitality transactions. The role centers on PHP web applications, event-driven microservices, relational database performance, and integrations with complex payment-partner APIs. The engineer will contribute to architecture, observability, automated testing, and operational reliability across cloud-native infrastructure. Success requires strong ownership, clear collaboration during production issues, and awareness of PCI, privacy, and secure-by-design practices. This is a remote-first role serving customers and teams across multiple global regions.

Sample interview questions
I would explain the API contract, authentication approach, idempotency strategy, timeout and retry policies, error classification, and monitoring. I would also cover reconciliation processes and how I tested adverse cases such as duplicate callbacks, delayed responses, and partial failures.
I would use durable event delivery, idempotent consumers, unique transaction identifiers, and a persistent audit trail. The service would validate event schemas, separate retriable from terminal failures, route failures to a dead-letter process, and expose metrics for lag, failures, and processing latency.
I start with query plans and production metrics to identify scan patterns, join costs, lock contention, and index gaps. I then validate improvements with targeted indexes, query rewrites, appropriate pagination, and load testing while monitoring the impact on write performance and database resources.
I minimize handling of sensitive card data, use tokenized provider workflows where possible, enforce least-privilege access, and ensure secrets are managed securely. I also prioritize input validation, encryption in transit and at rest, auditability, dependency hygiene, and security review of integration boundaries.
I would describe establishing a clear incident owner, assessing customer impact, mitigating safely, and using dashboards and logs to guide investigation. I would provide concise stakeholder updates with known facts and next steps, then lead a blameless retrospective with concrete prevention actions such as tests, alerts, or runbook improvements.
