Sample interview questions
Describe a backend workflow or event-driven service you designed and operated in production.

I would explain the business problem, service boundaries, event contracts, persistence model, failure-handling strategy, and operational metrics. I would also describe how I addressed idempotency, retries, dead-letter handling, testing, and the resulting reliability or performance improvements.

How would you design a reliable workflow that coordinates actions across several services?

I would begin by defining clear ownership, APIs, and durable event schemas. I would use asynchronous messaging where appropriate, design for idempotency and eventual consistency, provide compensating actions for failures, and add tracing, metrics, alerts, and runbooks before production rollout.

What is your approach to improving a slow or unreliable PostgreSQL-backed API?

I would first use metrics, traces, logs, and query plans to identify the bottleneck. Depending on the cause, I might improve indexes and query patterns, reduce unnecessary round trips, introduce caching carefully, tune connection handling, and validate improvements with load tests and production monitoring.

How do you use AI coding agents while maintaining code quality and security?

I treat generated code as an initial implementation rather than an authority. I verify requirements and edge cases, review architecture and security implications, run automated tests and static checks, validate behavior locally, and hold the final change to the same review and production standards as handwritten code.

Tell us about a time you handled a production incident involving a distributed system.

I would describe how I assessed customer impact, stabilized the system, communicated status, and used observability data to isolate the failure. After recovery, I would document the root cause, implement preventive fixes such as stronger safeguards or alerts, and share the lessons with the team.

From independent properties to hotel groups, we help hoteliers transform operations and uplevel their commercial strategy through a unified platform that integrates with hundreds of partners. And we do it with a completely remote team. Imagine working alongside global innovators to build AI-powered solutions that solve hoteliers’ biggest challenges. Since our founding in 2012, we’ve become the World’s Best Hotel PMS Solutions Provider and landed on Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 again in 2024, but we’re just getting started.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Workflow Squad, you’ll design, build, and operate product capabilities that help Cloudbeds support increasingly complex hospitality operations. This is primarily a backend product engineering role, working in PHP and Java across services, APIs, data, and event-driven systems, with occasional frontend contributions when needed.

You’ll take ownership of work from technical design through production, balancing near-term product delivery with the reliability and maintainability of the broader platform. You’ll work closely with product and engineering partners to solve ambiguous problems and deliver simple, dependable experiences for our customers.

Our Workflow Squad:

The Workflow Squad builds product and platform capabilities that coordinate business processes across Cloudbeds products and services. The team works across existing systems to create flexible, reliable experiences that support a wide range of customer needs. You’ll join a hands-on, product-minded group that values pragmatic architecture, clear ownership, maintainable code, and strong collaboration across Product, Design, Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering. The squad works AI-first. Claude Code is the default starting point for implementation, and the engineer who ships a change owns it in review and in production.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Design, build, and operate customer-facing backend services and product capabilities primarily in PHP and Java, with focused frontend contributions when needed
  • Build reliable APIs, data models, integrations, asynchronous processes, and event-driven services using PostgreSQL, Kafka, REST, and gRPC
  • Own changes end-to-end across application code, service boundaries, infrastructure, and deployment configuration, from technical design through production operation
  • Work AI-first, using Claude Code as the default starting point for implementation, and hold what it produces to the same review, testing, and production bar as code you write by hand
  • Improve scalability, resilience, performance, security, and maintainability across distributed systems that support customer-critical operations
  • Own observability, automated testing, release quality, production support, and incident response as part of the team’s on-call rotation
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Security, and other engineering teams to turn ambiguous requirements into pragmatic, reliable product solutions
  • Contribute as a senior individual contributor through architecture decisions, code reviews, pair programming, documentation, mentoring, and continuous improvement of engineering practices

What Sets You Up for Success:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building, shipping, and operating production applications, with strong proficiency in PHP and/or Java
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including maintainable architecture, automated testing, debugging, performance, security, and operational reliability
  • Solid understanding of API design, relational data modeling, PostgreSQL, distributed systems, and asynchronous or event-driven architecture
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar messaging and streaming systems, REST, gRPC, and service integrations
  • Experience owning cloud-native delivery and operations, including Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, CI/CD, observability, and production incident response
  • A track record of owning complex work end-to-end, navigating ambiguity, and making pragmatic technical trade-offs
  • Comfort working in a polyglot codebase and making focused contributions outside your primary backend stack when the product requires it
  • Strong product sense and customer empathy, with the ability to translate business needs into simple, reliable product experiences
  • Hands-on experience shipping production code with AI coding agents
  • Business-level English fluency, with strong written communication and collaboration skills in a remote, globally distributed team

Compensation: Depending on your skills and experience, you can expect your annual compensation to be between $130,000 and $175,000 USD. Please note that we maintain high flexibility, and packages above this range will be considered. (The salary is only for US-based candidates).

Work Authorization: Please note that applicants must be currently authorized to work in the location where the position is located without requiring visa sponsorship. At this time, Cloudbeds is unable to provide sponsorship for work visas.
