Sample interview questions
I would review the account's loss history, current controls, exposure changes, policy structure, coverage requirements, and market conditions. I would combine those findings with relevant security telemetry, identify material risk drivers, and develop a pricing and terms recommendation that protects rate adequacy while supporting a thoughtful retention strategy.
I would first clarify the broker's rationale and the insured's business changes, then assess whether the requested terms are supported by the risk profile and underwriting guidelines. If concessions are appropriate, I would seek balanced alternatives such as revised retention, sublimits, security-control requirements, or targeted coverage adjustments, escalating when the request exceeds my authority.
Useful signals include external attack-surface exposure, multi-factor authentication adoption, endpoint protection, vulnerability and patch-management practices, backup and recovery controls, phishing resilience, privileged-access controls, and evidence of ransomware preparedness. I would use these indicators alongside traditional underwriting information rather than treating any single signal as determinative.
I would segment the portfolio by renewal date, premium size, complexity, loss activity, and likelihood of negotiation. I would begin early on complex or high-value accounts, set clear milestones, communicate proactively with brokers, and maintain disciplined documentation so that straightforward accounts progress efficiently without sacrificing responsiveness.
In a complex submission, I would summarize the exposure, key coverage concerns, loss information, control weaknesses, and my recommended path forward before escalating. Providing a concise analysis and proposed options enables senior underwriters to make a timely decision while ensuring the broker receives clear and professional communication.
