Sample interview questions
I would begin by gathering current-period financial and tax data, reconciling book-to-tax differences, calculating current and deferred taxes, and documenting assumptions in clear workpapers. I would validate deferred tax balances against tax basis balance sheets, assess valuation allowances, and coordinate review items with tax leadership before supporting financial statement disclosures.
I would reconcile the general ledger balance to sales tax return data, transaction-level reports, and payment records by jurisdiction. I would isolate timing differences, exemptions, rate issues, or mapping errors, then document the root cause, prepare any needed journal entry, and work with billing or accounting teams to prevent recurrence.
I would identify deductible temporary differences and carryforwards, confirm the applicable tax jurisdictions and enacted rates, and assess available sources of taxable income under ASC 740. I would document positive and negative evidence, including reversal patterns, forecasts where appropriate, and recent profitability, then recommend the appropriate valuation allowance conclusion for review.
I first clarify the business process and the stakeholder’s decision or action needed. Then I explain the requirement in plain language, connect it to the operational impact, provide a concise example, and summarize the next steps in writing so the team has a practical and auditable guide.
I would use AI to accelerate repetitive tasks such as organizing data, identifying reconciliation exceptions, drafting process documentation, or summarizing research inputs. However, I would validate outputs against source records, preserve confidentiality, apply company data-governance requirements, and retain professional judgment for technical tax conclusions.
