Sample interview questions
How would you evaluate whether a customer incentive program generated incremental, profitable revenue?

I would establish a pre-incentive baseline using historical customer performance, seasonality, and relevant market factors. I would then compare actual performance with the expected baseline, calculate incremental revenue and margin after the incentive cost, and assess whether results were durable after the program ended. I would summarize the findings by customer segment and incentive type to recommend which structures should be scaled, changed, or retired.

Describe your approach to maintaining a complex revenue-adjustment tracking model used by multiple teams.

I would first document inputs, owners, timing, business rules, and downstream reporting dependencies. I would introduce standardized input controls, version management, reconciliations to source systems and Accounting records, and clear exception flags. I would also simplify the model where possible and provide a concise operating guide so stakeholders can understand the outputs and approval process.

How would you partner with Accounting during month-end close when a new customer incentive has changed expected revenue?

I would confirm the executed deal terms, effective dates, performance thresholds, and accounting treatment early in the close cycle. I would reconcile operational data to the deal model, quantify the current-period adjustment and forward-looking impact, and provide clear support for accruals or true-ups. I would remain available to resolve variances quickly and ensure the forecast reflects the finalized accounting outcome.

Tell us about a time you had to explain a complex financial model to a non-finance stakeholder.

I would focus first on the decision the stakeholder needs to make rather than on every model detail. I would use a simple summary of key drivers, assumptions, scenarios, and financial trade-offs, supported by a visual or concise dashboard. I would then make the underlying model available for validation while clearly identifying any assumptions that could materially change the recommendation.

How do you prioritize recurring reporting responsibilities alongside urgent strategic analyses?

I prioritize close-related and board-critical deliverables first because they have fixed deadlines and broad business impact. I then assess ad hoc requests by decision urgency, financial materiality, stakeholder impact, and effort, communicating trade-offs early when priorities conflict. I use a structured work plan with milestones, protect time for recurring controls, and automate repeatable reporting where feasible.

  • Analyze, discuss, and improve efficacy of deal desk: role helps build a quarterly post mortem to assess what financial incentives were successful vs. unsuccessful, how much accretive revenue was driven, and how deal desk strategy should be augmented in the future based on learnings
  • Strategic financial modeling: analyst will evaluate strategic initiatives of interest to the senior leadership team acting as the analytic engine to support decision making
  • Work cross-functionally to address data requests tied to high-impact initiatives, providing clarity on the organization’s business composition and key operational drivers
  • Tracking of adjustments to revenue due to customer incentives and accurately project out adjusted revenue based on deals live or expected to go live to present an accurate picture of anticipated financial performance
  • Work closely with Accounting during the monthly and quarterly close process to ensure revenue adjustments and customer incentive impacts are accurately and timely reflected in the financials
  • Serve as the owner of the company’s primary KPI file, ensuring accuracy and accessibility of the key metrics used in Board of Directors meetings, strategic planning, and other critical business reviews

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Finance or related field)
  • 5+ years of experience in Financial Planning and Analysis, previous experience in corporate development, accounting, investment banking, strategy, a finance development program, deal desk, or consulting a plus
  • Extremely proficient in Excel / Google Sheets with strong modeling skills and attention to detail; comfortable managing complex files, with the ability to take ownership of them and transform them to improve efficiency and usability
  • Highly organized, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities across multiple stakeholders simultaneously, balancing short term / ad-hoc requests with long term projects
  • Understanding of accounting/financial statements and experience in valuation a plus
  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Strong business judgment and desire to learn about underlying business
  • Understand complex data with the ability to present in a way that is easy to understand, including data visualization
