Sample interview questions
How would you structure a one-hour workshop for students exploring architectural drafting careers?

I would begin with an overview of common entry-level roles and the skills employers prioritize, then walk through a realistic drafting workflow and the tools involved. I would reserve time for examples of portfolios, job-search advice, and a focused Q&A so attendees leave with clear next steps.

How do you explain the difference between an Architectural Drafter, CAD Technician, and Junior Designer?

I explain that titles vary by employer, but drafters and CAD technicians generally focus on producing accurate technical drawings under established standards, while junior designers may have more involvement in design development and coordination. I also emphasize reviewing actual job descriptions because responsibilities often overlap.

What practical AutoCAD or Revit guidance would you prioritize for entry-level candidates?

I would prioritize drawing organization, layers or families, annotation, dimensioning, sheet setup, model coordination, and quality-control habits. I would also stress that employers value candidates who can follow office standards, accept redlines, and communicate issues clearly.

How would you help a career changer who has completed coursework but lacks professional drafting experience?

I would help them develop a targeted portfolio with clean, well-documented sample work and teach them how to explain their transferable skills. I would also recommend applying to suitable junior roles, networking with local firms, and preparing concise examples that demonstrate software proficiency and attention to detail.

How do you keep a live workshop engaging for students with different experience levels?

I use a clear agenda, concrete examples, and periodic prompts for questions or short reflection exercises. I avoid unnecessary jargon, define key terms, and provide optional next steps so beginners can follow along while more experienced participants still gain practical value.

About CourseCareers

CourseCareers is an online education platform that helps people launch new careers without a college degree or prior experience.

We partner with industry professionals to create job-focused courses that teach practical, employer-aligned skills across technology, business, and the skilled trades. Our students are career changers looking for realistic, entry-level roles — and coaching helps bridge the gap between coursework and landing the job.

About the Role

We’re looking for a part-time Architectural Drafting Career Coach to support students through live workshops and optional 1:1 coaching.

This is not a traditional employment role and not a guaranteed-income position. It’s a flexible, paid opportunity best suited for drafting professionals who enjoy mentoring, teaching, and helping others break into the field — with upside if students choose to work with you.

How This Role Actually Works

  • You host a live, one-hour workshop (seminar-style) for students

  • You are paid $50 per workshop, plus any private coaching business you acquire

  • You may receive exclusive coaching opportunities based on performance and engagement

  • Workshops are used to provide value, answer questions, and showcase your expertise

  • If students choose to book you for 1:1 coaching, you keep the coaching revenue

  • You set your own availability and working hours

There is no requirement to convert students — workshops are paid regardless — but conversion is where the upside comes from.

Responsibilities

  • Host a live, one-hour workshop on a monthly basis

  • Answer student questions about architectural drafting careers and the job search

  • Share real-world insight into what entry-level drafting roles actually look like

  • Discuss tools, workflows, and expectations in real drafting environments

  • Provide optional 1:1 coaching to students who request it

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional drafting experience (architectural, construction, or design firms)

  • Strong working knowledge of tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar drafting software

  • Understanding of entry-level roles like Architectural Drafter, CAD Technician, or Junior Designer

  • Interest in mentoring and helping career changers

  • Strong communication and teaching ability

  • Availability at least three evenings per week, ideally Tuesday–Thursday

  • Self-starter mindset — comfortable leading workshops independently

Ideal Fit

This role is a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy teaching and mentoring

  • Want flexible, side income

  • Like the idea of being paid to teach — with optional upside

  • Don’t need guaranteed hours or full-time income

Compensation

  • $50 per one-hour workshop (One per month guaranteed)

  • Unlimited upside from 1:1 coaching sessions you convert

  • No caps, no quotas, no minimums
