Sample interview questions
How have you used infrastructure as code to improve the reliability and repeatability of cloud environments?

I define reusable, version-controlled infrastructure modules and enforce peer review, automated validation, and controlled deployment pipelines. This reduces configuration drift, creates auditable changes, and makes environment recovery or expansion much more predictable.

Describe how you would investigate a production incident involving elevated application latency on AWS.

I would first assess customer impact and stabilize the service, using dashboards, traces, logs, and AWS metrics to isolate the affected dependency or resource. I would communicate status clearly, apply the lowest-risk mitigation, document the timeline, and follow with a blameless review and preventative automation or alerting improvement.

What practices would you use to deliver infrastructure changes with no downtime?

I would use backward-compatible changes, staged rollouts, health checks, automated rollback criteria, and progressive delivery where appropriate. I would validate changes in lower environments, monitor key service-level indicators during deployment, and coordinate application dependencies before making irreversible changes.

How do you balance rapid automation with security when using AI coding tools?

I treat AI-generated output as an initial draft rather than trusted code. I review it for security and operational risks, test it in isolated environments, apply standard code review and scanning controls, and ensure it follows established least-privilege and secret-management practices.

How would you partner with application engineers when platform requirements compete with feature-delivery priorities?

I would frame infrastructure work in terms of developer and customer outcomes, using reliability, deployment, and incident metrics to make tradeoffs visible. Then I would prioritize jointly, deliver incremental improvements, and provide self-service tooling that reduces friction for engineering teams.

Opportunity details

About this role.

At Dscout, we’re building the most flexible and powerful UX research platform on the market—trusted by the world’s top brands in finance (JP Morgan Chase, Intuit, Charles Schwab, PayPal), healthcare (Aya, Headspace), consumer goods (Keen, Verizon, Target, Northface), and tech (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Meta, Spotify, AirBnB). Our tools help teams deeply understand the humans behind their products, so they can build better ones. We are expanding our smart and driven team and would love for you to join us.

We’re looking for smart and driven DevOps Engineers to help scale our platform. You have experience with AWS infrastructure and beyond and have seen a couple (or more) different ways to do it. You are fully bought into IaC (Infrastructure as Code), have used one of the popular tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc), and are excited to help us evolve our infrastructure automation.

You have a product mindset and have a history of working with application developers, Quality Engineers, and Security & Compliance teams to understand their needs, prioritize them, and deliver DevOps solutions that address those. You use AI coding tools daily, and like everything else you ship, you trust the output only as far as you’ve verified it. You are also data driven and use metrics to drive your decisions.

You are capable of juggling many tasks involving future projects, support requests, and SRE duties — including being a primary responder to production incidents, since compliance limits production access on many systems to DevOps.

Our team is growing but we’re not a big company. We work collaboratively, move fast (we deploy to production many times a day), and we value technical quality. If you are excited about the challenge of building a platform that powers an incredible product while working alongside a great engineering team, we’d love to hear from you!
