Sample interview questions
How have you applied ASC 340-40 to deferred commission accounting during the monthly close?

I have evaluated incremental costs of obtaining customer contracts, established capitalization criteria, and applied portfolio-based amortization methodologies aligned with expected customer lives. During close, I prepare deferral and amortization entries, reconcile balances to source commission data, investigate variances, and retain clear support for audit review.

Describe your experience administering global banking portals and payment controls.

I have administered banking-platform access using role-based entitlements, periodic user reviews, dual approvals, and documented onboarding and offboarding controls. I also monitor payment-security features such as ACH filters, approval workflows, secure file transmission, and KYC documentation to reduce fraud and operational risk.

What approach would you take to improve a commission accounting process that relies heavily on spreadsheets?

I would first map data sources, key calculations, approvals, and reconciliation points to identify control gaps and manual bottlenecks. Then I would standardize inputs, automate repeatable calculations through the commission engine or controlled workflows, build exception reporting, and validate outputs against historical results before deployment.

How do you manage statutory compliance for multiple foreign subsidiaries?

I maintain a centralized compliance calendar with entity-specific filing deadlines, ownership, required documentation, and escalation milestones. I coordinate regularly with local providers, Legal, and International Accounting, confirm completion with supporting evidence, and communicate material risks early so deadlines are not missed.

Tell us about a time you resolved a complex accounting or treasury issue involving multiple stakeholders.

I start by defining the issue, assembling source data, and clarifying decision rights across Finance, Legal, banking partners, and system owners. I communicate a concise action plan with owners and deadlines, document the final resolution and control implications, and use the outcome to strengthen the process against recurrence.
