Sample interview questions
How would you approach classifying a product under the Mexican tariff schedule when the product description is incomplete?

I would first identify the missing technical facts, such as material composition, function, manufacturing process, intended use, and component breakdown. I would then review the applicable LIGIE headings, legal notes, explanatory materials, and relevant Mexican criteria before documenting both the provisional conclusion and the information needed to confirm it.

Describe how you would validate an alternative solution to a customs-compliance scenario.

I would test the solution against the factual assumptions, applicable legal provisions, tariff notes, procedural requirements, and any relevant restrictions or NOM obligations. I would flag unsupported assumptions, identify missing evidence, and explain whether the proposed sequence of decisions is compliant and complete.

What factors do you assess when reviewing origin eligibility under T-MEC?

I review the product classification, bill of materials, production steps, origin of inputs, applicable product-specific rule of origin, tariff-shift requirements, regional value content where relevant, and documentation supporting the claim. I also consider whether the producer, exporter, and importer records consistently support the certification.

How do you communicate a complex customs determination to a non-specialist project team?

I begin with the conclusion and its practical impact, then explain the decision in a structured sequence using plain language. I distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions, cite the controlling regulatory basis, and identify any uncertainties or additional information that could change the outcome.

Which official Mexican resources would you use to research a customs-compliance question?

Depending on the issue, I would consult resources from ANAM, SAT, SNICE, and VUCEM, along with the Ley Aduanera, LIGIE/TIGIE, applicable rules, NOM requirements, and published trade guidance. I would retain the relevant citations and verify that the source is current for the scenario period.
