Sample interview questions
I would first establish baseline metrics such as LCP, INP, JavaScript bundle size, render time, and API latency. I would then prioritize techniques such as list virtualization, image and media optimization, route-level code splitting, memoization where profiling supports it, and pagination or incremental loading. I would validate each change with production monitoring and controlled experiments to ensure it improves both user experience and engagement.
I would begin by defining user flows, loading and error states, ownership boundaries, and API contracts with backend partners. Where appropriate, I would use a backend-for-frontend or aggregated GraphQL layer to avoid excessive client-side round trips. I would build the UI with resilient state handling, observability, feature flags, tests, and a rollout plan that supports safe iteration.
I separate the experiment-specific logic from stable domain components and use feature flags to limit risk and simplify rollback. I set minimum quality requirements for accessibility, tests, error handling, and instrumentation even for early iterations. After a successful experiment, I schedule consolidation work so temporary code does not become permanent technical debt.
I review correctness, user impact, accessibility, performance implications, API and state-management choices, test coverage, and maintainability. I also check whether the implementation follows established patterns and whether error, loading, and edge cases are addressed. My feedback is specific and constructive, with an emphasis on helping the author understand tradeoffs rather than only requesting changes.
I would explain the tradeoff in terms of user outcomes, delivery timing, risk, and measurable impact rather than implementation details alone. For example, I might compare a faster initial version with limited personalization against a more complex version that could improve relevance but delay launch. I would recommend a path, clarify assumptions, and propose metrics or an experiment to validate the decision.
