The role, at a glance.
Reddit is hiring a front-end-focused software engineer to build and evolve its web media player and the APIs supporting video and audio experiences. The role combines React, TypeScript, Next.js, and UI performance work with backend API development in Go or Python. Responsibilities cover technical design, implementation, testing, experimentation, launch, code review, and mentoring within a fully remote engineering environment. The engineer will collaborate closely with product, design, client, and platform teams to deliver low-latency, scalable media features. This is a US-remote employee role with a disclosed base-salary range and potential equity.

Sample interview questions
I would first establish baseline metrics such as time to first frame, buffering ratio, API latency, bundle size, and errors by device and network type. I would trace the critical path from player initialization through manifest and media requests, then prioritize improvements such as code splitting, preloading critical assets, reducing API round trips, adaptive bitrate tuning, and better caching. I would validate changes through controlled experiments and production monitoring.
I would define clear resource boundaries and versioned contracts for media metadata, playback permissions, captions, reactions, and creator tools. The API would use consistent error handling, pagination where needed, authorization checks, and observability fields such as request IDs. I would select REST or GraphQL based on client data-fetching needs and use asynchronous events or streaming only where real-time state genuinely requires it.
I identify the highest-risk paths early and apply proportionate safeguards: focused design review, automated tests for core playback and entitlement flows, feature flags, staged rollout, dashboards, and rollback plans. This allows the team to ship incrementally while protecting the user experience. I also ensure incidents and experiment results feed back into engineering standards.
I would decompose the experience into reusable components with explicit state boundaries and semantic HTML. I would partner with design on responsive behavior, keyboard navigation, focus management, captions, contrast, and loading or error states. I would keep presentation separate from data-fetching logic and add component and integration tests for critical interactions.
I would pair mentoring with real delivery work by giving context on system decisions, setting appropriately scoped ownership, and providing timely, actionable code-review feedback. I would explain tradeoffs rather than only prescribing solutions, encourage engineers to write design notes, and create opportunities for them to present learnings. This builds independence while maintaining quality and alignment.
