Sample interview questions
How have you identified and qualified a new business opportunity in the autonomous systems or defense market?

I start by mapping mission priorities, customer pain points, procurement context, and the competitive landscape. I validate the opportunity through conversations with technical and mission stakeholders, assess strategic fit and likely deal value, and build a pursuit plan with clear qualification criteria and next steps.

Describe how you translate a complex technical capability into a value proposition for a mission customer.

I first clarify the customer’s operational objective, constraints, and success measures. I then connect specific capabilities to measurable mission outcomes—such as faster secure deployment, reduced risk, or improved interoperability—while using language appropriate for both technical and executive audiences.

What is your approach to building relationships with partners and government stakeholders?

I lead with preparation, credibility, and consistent follow-through. I seek to understand each stakeholder’s priorities, provide useful market or technical insight, align expectations early, and maintain a structured cadence of communication that advances mutual objectives.

Tell us about a time you negotiated a complex deal with competing priorities.

In a complex negotiation, I identify the non-negotiables and tradeable items for both parties before discussions begin. I use a transparent, value-based approach, involve the right internal experts, document decisions carefully, and work toward terms that protect long-term partnership value rather than simply closing quickly.

How would you use pipeline and KPI data to improve business development performance?

I would monitor leading indicators such as opportunity creation, stage conversion, stakeholder engagement, proposal activity, and sales-cycle duration. I would segment results by customer type and solution area, identify bottlenecks, test targeted changes to outreach or qualification, and use findings to prioritize the highest-probability pursuits.
