Sample interview questions
I would begin with a short diagnostic covering algebra, geometry, number theory, and counting, then review the student's reasoning rather than only final answers. Based on the results, I would create a targeted learning plan with measurable goals.
I first ask the student to describe what they have tried and identify the blocking point. I then break the problem into smaller observations, use guiding questions, and gradually move from the underlying concept to a repeatable strategy.
I teach students to classify problems by topic and difficulty, manage their time, test small cases, and recognize when to skip and return to a question. We also review errors after practice sets to convert mistakes into specific habits.
I would use a digital whiteboard, ask frequent checkpoint questions, and have the student actively write or explain each step. I would vary instruction between concept review, timed practice, guided discovery, and reflection on solution methods.
I provide concise feedback on concepts mastered, recurring gaps, and recommended practice problems. I also set a small number of actionable goals for the next session and communicate progress in an encouraging, specific way.
