Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in the Legal Consultant - Antitrust and Competition position at Axiom. With over six years of dedicated experience in competition law, including merger control, regulatory investigations, and commercial advisory, I have developed a comprehensive skill set that aligns perfectly with the requirements of this regional role.

In my previous roles, I have conducted antitrust due diligence for cross-border transactions, drafted and negotiated key transaction documents, and coordinated with external counsel across Southeast Asia. I am comfortable working independently as the in-house antitrust specialist while effectively managing multiple stakeholders and executive-level reporting.

I am excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise to Axiom's diverse and dynamic team. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Sample interview questions
Can you describe your experience with antitrust due diligence in a cross-border M&A transaction?

I have led due diligence for multiple cross-border deals, reviewing transaction documents in virtual data rooms, identifying antitrust risks such as market concentration and coordinated effects, and coordinating with local counsel in different jurisdictions to assess filing requirements. I also prepared key issues lists and advised on deal structure to mitigate regulatory risk.

How would you approach drafting a response to a competition authority's inquiry?

I would first thoroughly review the inquiry and gather all relevant internal documents and data. Then I would formulate a structured legal argument based on the applicable competition law framework, aligning with the company's commercial interests. I would coordinate with external counsel to ensure consistency and review the response with the executive committee before submission.

What are common antitrust issues in exclusivity and incentive programs?

These programs can raise concerns under competition law regarding exclusive dealing, loyalty discounts, and potential foreclosure of competitors. I would analyze market share, duration, and whether the program forecloses a substantial part of the market. I would also assess whether there are efficiency justifications and provide practical recommendations to mitigate risk.

Tell us about your experience managing external law firms across different jurisdictions.

I have managed panels of external counsel in Southeast Asia and other regions, aligning legal strategies and ensuring consistent positions across jurisdictions. I would brief counsel on the company's objectives, review their advice, and consolidate it into clear recommendations for internal stakeholders, while controlling costs and ensuring timely delivery.

How do you stay current with changes in competition law regulations?

I regularly follow updates from competition authorities, such as the European Commission, DOJ/FTC, and ASEAN regulators. I also participate in professional legal networks, attend antitrust conferences, and subscribe to legal publications. In my role, I also conduct internal research and training to keep colleagues informed.
