Sample interview questions
How would you approach discovery with a prospect that has an unclear research challenge?

I would begin with open questions about business objectives, target users, current research practices, stakeholders, and decision timelines. I would then synthesize the discussion into specific pain points and use cases, validate those findings with the prospect, and connect them to an appropriate platform workflow and measurable outcome.

Describe how you would tailor a product demonstration for different stakeholders in an enterprise buying committee.

I would align the demo to each stakeholder’s priorities. Research practitioners need to see methodological fit and workflow detail, executives need strategic outcomes and value, and technical or procurement stakeholders need clarity on implementation, security, and operational requirements. I would use one coherent narrative while adjusting depth and examples for the audience.

What makes a customer evaluation or proof of concept successful?

A successful evaluation starts with jointly agreed success criteria, a realistic use case, clear owners, and a timeline. I would provide structured guidance on research design, recruiting, fielding, and analysis, check progress regularly, and conclude by mapping results back to the customer’s decision criteria and adoption plan.

How do you communicate research methodology to a senior business stakeholder who is unfamiliar with qualitative research?

I avoid jargon and frame methodology around the decision it will support. For example, I would explain how in-context interviews or diary studies reveal the motivations and barriers behind behavior, then use a concise example to show how those insights reduce product risk and improve decision quality.

Tell us how you would handle a prospect requesting a product capability that does not currently exist.

I would acknowledge the need, clarify the underlying business outcome, and be transparent about current product capabilities and limitations. Where possible, I would propose a viable workflow or alternative, document the request with context and impact, and share structured feedback with Product without making unapproved roadmap commitments.

  • Serve as the product expert-explaining capabilities, value, limitations, and best‑practice approaches.
  • Scope, plan, and execute customer evaluations, including research design, recruiting, fielding, and analysis support.
  • Partner with prospects to create a clear roadmap for onboarding, adoption, and long‑term success.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to develop presales collateral, case studies, and thought‑leadership materials.
  • Provide structured feedback to Product, Research, and Customer Success based on customer insights.
  • Participate in conferences, customer onsites, and company events (approx. 25% travel).
  • Contribute to Dscout’s culture of feedback, continuous improvement, and research excellence.

What You Should Have

  • 3+ years in a customer-facing SaaS role such as Solutions Consulting, Solutions Engineering, Research Consulting, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of qualitative research methodologies with hands-on experience planning and executing research.
  • Ability to communicate complex research workflows and translate them into compelling product stories.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills-able to be consultative, clear, and persuasive with senior stakeholders.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity, structuring messy problems, and crafting strategic recommendations.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in business, behavioral sciences, HCI, design research, or equivalent professional experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting enterprise-level sales cycles.
  • Familiarity with UX research, insights, or usability testing platforms (Dscout, UserTesting, Maze, etc.).
  • Exposure to product management or prototyping tools such as Figma or Miro.
  • Leadership experience including mentoring, onboarding, or serving as a team lead.

  • Demonstrated thought leadership through internal enablement or external research-community engagement.
  • Providing meaningful insights to the Product and Marketing teams that inform roadmap and positioning.
