Sample interview questions
I begin by segmenting accounts by revenue potential, renewal timing, adoption maturity, stakeholder coverage, and risk. For priority accounts, I build a mutual account plan that links customer objectives to specific product capabilities, establish executive relationships, and define measurable expansion milestones. I review progress regularly with internal partners and adjust the plan based on adoption data, competitive activity, and customer feedback.
I first diagnose the underlying issue through structured discovery rather than responding immediately with a discount. I quantify realized value, identify gaps in adoption or service, align stakeholders around the customer's desired outcomes, and present a retention plan that addresses those gaps. If commercial concessions are necessary, I ensure they are tied to a clear give-get, such as term length, broader adoption, or an expanded partnership.
I use defined deal stages with objective exit criteria, validate economic buyer access and decision processes, and document risks, next steps, and close dates in the CRM. I separate confirmed opportunities from early-stage potential and regularly inspect pipeline coverage against quota. I also incorporate product utilization, sentiment, contract timing, and stakeholder changes into renewal forecasts.
In a complex account, I would establish a shared success plan with clear owners across customer success, product, solutions, and sales. I would communicate the commercial objective, customer business case, dependencies, and timeline, then hold focused checkpoints to resolve blockers. This creates a coordinated customer experience while ensuring each team understands how its work supports adoption, renewal, and expansion.
Effective discovery uncovers both the operational problem and the strategic impact of solving it. I tailor questions to each stakeholder's priorities, map influence and decision authority, and validate success metrics, budget, timeline, and alternatives. I then synthesize those perspectives into a shared value narrative that helps the buying group reach alignment.
