Sample interview questions
I would begin by synthesizing existing research, marketplace data, and qualitative interviews with professionals to understand their unmet needs, perceptions, and alternatives. I would translate the strongest insight into a differentiated value proposition, positioning framework, promise, reasons to believe, and messaging hierarchy. I would then validate the strategy through concept testing and partner with channel owners to operationalize it across the customer journey.
I have used awareness, consideration, association, and preference measures alongside qualitative feedback to identify gaps between intended positioning and market perception. For example, when a key message was not being retained, I refined the message hierarchy and creative cues, then tracked improvement through follow-up measurement. The important step is turning measurement into a prioritized decision rather than simply reporting results.
I make the brief focused and decision-oriented: a clear business problem, audience insight, desired perception or behavior change, single-minded proposition, proof points, mandatories, and success measures. I also share the strategic context and leave room for creative teams to solve the problem in an original way. During development, I evaluate work against the strategy rather than personal preference.
I would involve key partners early through working sessions that surface their customer knowledge, business priorities, and implementation constraints. I would communicate the strategy in practical tools such as messaging frameworks, examples, decision principles, and channel-specific guidance. Ongoing governance, regular feedback loops, and visible leadership sponsorship would help make the strategy actionable rather than static.
I would establish a clear brand operating system for AI: approved prompts, voice and messaging rules, examples of acceptable outputs, risk guidelines, review workflows, and escalation paths for sensitive use cases. I would pilot the system with defined teams and measure quality, speed, consistency, and adoption. The goal is to enable decentralized creation while retaining human accountability for strategic and high-impact communications.

About the Brand Strategy Team
We act as the architects of the Thumbtack brand – claiming a distinct position in the market, defining a brand promise that delivers on that position, and partnering with skilled experts across the company to bring it to life. Our work spans brand insights, brand strategy, content strategy, and integrated marketing. We set the roadmap for the brand and extend our influence beyond Marketing & Communications into all parts of the organization to make sure every touchpoint strengthens the brand.
About the role
As the Senior Brand Manager focused on our pro audience, you’ll help define how we position the company, what we promise pros, and how that promise comes to life across every touchpoint. Reporting directly to the Director of Brand Strategy, you’ll set vision for major brand workstreams while shaping how the team and the company think about the pro side of our brand.
What you’ll do
Lead foundational workstreams to help roll out our new brand playbook, including defining pro positioning and content strategy, educating and training partner teams, and more — and refresh these artifacts as the market shifts and new learnings emerge.
Identify high-leverage opportunities for the brand to drive growth on the pro side of our business, then translate them into clear creative briefs and strategic direction for internal and external creative partners.
Own pro brand insights work that informs strategy — including audience deep dives, creative experimentation, competitive analysis, and brand health tracking — and turn findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
Partner with channel owners across Marketing and Communications to translate pro brand strategy into an integrated content strategy and creative calendar that meets business and brand goals.
Extend the brand’s influence beyond Marketing and Communications by building relationships with cross-functional partners in the product, service and sales organizations; create proactive moments to communicate brand vision and align company priorities to it.
Lead brand support for AI-driven content, building prompts, skills, brand review systems, and other infrastructure that allows the brand to scale as content creation becomes more decentralized.
Orchestrate brand strategy and creative work for tentpole moments, including campaign launches, product launches, and major events like our annual Pro Summit.
Serve as a senior voice on the Brand Strategy team — setting standards, shaping how we work, and driving alignment with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
In order to be successful, you must bring
6-8+ years of brand marketing experience, with a strong focus on brand strategy, positioning, and messaging; experience marketing to SMBs is a plus
Experience defining and implementing brand strategy – including brand promises, positioning frameworks, playbooks, and messaging architecture
Experience setting brand vision and roadmap, not just managing executions – comfortable operating upstream of campaigns and influencing how the broader org thinks about brand
Experience designing and managing brand health measurement programs (brand tracking, awareness, perception, brand lift) and translating findings into clear strategic action
Strong creative judgment, including experience writing compelling creative briefs, providing strategic guidance to creative agencies and in-house studios, and partnering with creative teams to develop standout work
Experience designing and running creative experimentation programs that improve campaign performance and feed back into brand strategy
Analytical rigor — comfortable planning and executing research with the help of internal or external research partners. Adept at synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data into insights, recommendations, and business cases
